Yes, the ambient air temperature is pretty irrelevant in this case as the sun heats the tarmac up to very high temperatures, and all of our road surfaces are tarmac, rather than concrete.
I think we'd all appreciate it, chicagogeorge, if you'd stop mocking us and poking fun at us - you've made your point more than once about how tame our hot spells are in comparison to the sultry sauna you hail form, so give it a bloody rest and stop bloviating, please.
What I'm mocking is sensationalist journalism. They need to give it a rest. Plenty of roads here are tarmac. I don't here any reporters saying that a normal summer day "melted" a road. Actually only once in the last 7 years, last year when temps broke 40C were there reports of pavements buckling

Certainly isn't very high on the horizon that's for sure

How is it sensationalist journalism when there are roads melting? They're just reporting what is actually happening - why does it bother you so much? Apparently, most roads in the UK will start 'melting' when the surface of the tarmac is above 50C.
It doesn't "bother" me. Just saw the news on an international wire feed. Found it pretty strange that's all. That along with hundreds dieing from 30C "heat" sounded like sensational journalism. The UK is has that reputation.
Thought of the school that i teach at actually. They are replacing the roof this summer which was tarmac, with a rubber roof.
Not a 100% sure, I know the driveway in my old house was tarmac. I used to repave it every year. Don't remember it ever melting away into the sewar, but I guess there are different compositions of it that can withstand different temperatures.
We just had a hellfire storm roll though lots of lightning torrential rain, and now I'm staring out my window (power was knocked out), and I can see the asphalt of my street smoking...
God you have to live LTE phones
Unfortunately these rains usher in a new weather pattern. Cooler and less summer like
Yes, on another topic, what is the GFS looking for the UK? It shows that the Jet will shift from Finland to England, which usually mean not very nice things. The high system now upon UK will die out above Central Europe in a few days, and some decent weather is approaching Finland from Central Europe on the 26th. FMI estimates already on the 24th. 25-27C highs (77-81F) expected. No, sorry, GFS shows up to 29C (84F) on the 24th and 27C on the 25th.
BUT, it should stay pretty decent in the UK after the 24th, certainly no 30C, but you know, normal summer temperatures.
Paris seems to be on the dividing line, and on the 27th everwhere south of Lyon-Munich-Bratislava should be soaking in 30-35C temps.
After this crappy week I don't even need 30C, I'm content with 25C.
Euro on the other hand shows a puny low system growing stronger and affecting the UK, while agreeing with the GFS that we will get better weather.
Let's see.
24 July map. Whole of Europe red. But purple is still better. White is not desirable anymore.
Good news is I can find the vodka with my iPhone flashlight
Sorry if I can off smug tonight guys... Nothing to do without electricity but drink more ten the 30 year norm
Lol kids won't go upstairs because of the lightning and the complete darkness in the house
