makes you wonder if the founding fathers put the big cities there for a reason. LOL Or have the cities grown because of it. (Philly, NYC, Boston)
The big cities are where they are because of geography, namely the location of harbors and the fall line, which are natural hubs of waterborne traffic, the primary means of transportation (especially trade and shipping) before the mid-19th century. These hubs also tend to be the warmest and least snowy areas, being low-lying and coastal; this effect is compounded by the big cities' urban heat islands. The Great Lakes' natural hubs present an exception, many being in the snowbelts, and cities developed there just fine.
The only reason the modern population still congregates around waterways and fall lines is because of pre-existing infrastructure. The natural hubs of the modern age (post-19th century) are airports and junctions of freeways and railroads, and indeed the many new cities founded in the 20th century are usually situated around road/rail junctions and airports, which can be built pretty much anywhere.

Indeed; for anywhere in the region it's unusual to get this big of a snowstorm this early.
A lot of snow is expected in Morris County, but the roads should be clear by tomorrow since the storm is ending tonight. Could be some icy spots though.
Oh yeah I'm not worried about PA and nj roads tomorrow they should b in good shape. I'm worried about getting screwed tonight in Charlotte and the mountains of VA. 81 leaves little room for error seeing as it's two lanes thru the mtns and heavily populated by trailers

That's interesting. The harder it falls the easier it will stick for you and the coast. Having trouble staying snow here. Going from nothing falling to rain/snow mix to all snow to sleet. Make up your mind! LOL
Radar & Metar animation 7:30am to 11:30am. You can see the progress of the rain changing to snow towards the coast. Pinks and yellows are heavier precip obviously.

Its above freezing at 700mb from Southern NJ & to Point Pleasant beach on the coast. 850s below freezing north of Atlantic City.
Basically Atlantic city is above freezing all the way past 10,000 feet. I already had 0.45" of rain so another 1/2" left I might squeeze a couple inches of snow if it can finally stay all snow

Yeah, the coast is not in a good position. I'm close to PA, but not on the right side of the Delaware River for this.
