Those who live in small cities around Wichita are the ones who say Wichita is dangerous. We just laugh. We are not a huge city and I feel safe in most places. I even lived in Midtown for 5 years and was safe living near halfway houses.

Yes, I was scared at first but my hubby grew up in LA and he was comfortable so that made me comfortable. Just be alert and lock up.

I live in Riverside now and actually just today went out and bought a new lawnmower because someone broke in my garage and stole mine last week. I have also lived on the east side around Lincoln and Webb and I had my cars broken in to or vandalized maybe 5 times in 15 years, then again we had up to 5 cars in my family so that increases the odds.
That said, property crimes are going to happen in any city this size, and while it ticks me off, I still feel as safe here as about anywhere.
I have every intention of living out my years here in Wichita, I love Riverside, but I am boarding the window up that faces the alley to keep those thieving b*stards out!
p.s. there is plenty to do... unless you can't live without mountains or oceans, about anything else you want is here.

I was wondering if any of you have any suggestion on where to live near Mconnell AFB? Is the base in a nice neighborhood? My husband & I are looking for a 2bedroom pet friendly apartment.

When you're right ... you're right. And, you're right. I agree with this completely.

Default Funny

As someone who lived in Wichita (well, Andover) for 3 years and in the Detroit metro area for 3 years, I just had to stop and laugh at the post claiming that Wichita was as bad as Detroit. That's funny stuff.

Detroit was downright frightening. I was scared to death any time I had to go there. Even the suburbs immediately surrounding Detroit were creepy and run down. Blocks of vacant houses-literally-all in a row, that were current or former drug dens. Multiple murders every day. So many areas of the city and many suburbs that were not safe.

I worked near Oaklawn and had to occasionally venture over to the WSU area for volunteer work and I never felt unsafe. Of course, in all questionable areas, I just avoid them whenever possible and stay away from them after dark.

Wichita does have crime, like all cities, but you will be fine if you look at that map and act accordingly.

Shoot I had my car stolen once and than someone else tried breaking into it within a month... Oh and this was on Waco near Harry. I had another car broken into, lawn mower stolen on miridian. Wichita does have alot of problems just like all medium to large cities in the USA but their are def alot worse. I feel that cities shouldnt grow to be to large, that is when they start having problems.

**** cleveland forreal go to plainview or 13th and grove or hydraulic and talk **** and say its sooo safe i guarantee you will be a murder statistic or probably robbed and beat down bad. wichita in the 90's had a average of 300 drive by shootings a year much worse than it is now. cops really cracked down on gangs here just look up wichita crips and see we had the feds do a R.I.C.O on them and plus I.C.E. took down a mexican gang. you want a relatively good comparison to cleveland look at Kansas City mo and ks put there crime stats together and every crime category is worse than cleveland no joke look it up. theres your relative comparison kcmo has the 5th highest murder rate with 112 murders and kck murder rate is 31 per 100,000 with 45 murders add that together that 157 murders . worse than cleveland aggravate assaults are alot higher than cleveland. just go to 12th and woodlawn in the projects and see if you don't get robbed or shot or get your car jacked just for looking at somebody wrong.
