Whatever. People get sick. Stay home, don't pollute the whole place.

If you can even believe this, I have actually sent people home before when they were ill. Trying to figure out who is going to topple next as one of your employees pollutes the entire place with whatever plague they have, is way too difficult.

These days we all stay home and work anyway, so people don't even bother taking sick days because they don't have to go anywhere in the first place.

Years ago I stayed home for 2 days after getting a job with the phone company as an operator only a week
before...my supervisor was not happy, she pointed out that she dragged herself in with the same cold/flu that I had...
ended up she was out 2 weeks, nearly had to be hospitalized because she was so sick...

I have to agree, even though the OP didn't ask to be sick, calling in on your first few days on the job is a
black mark against you..I would have dragged myself in and let boss and coworkers see your desire to work, even if your sick.
I also agree about calling the boss and explaining your situation and let them decide; however that only really
works when you have a working relationship with your boss, which unfortunately you don't..

I was in a similar situation Tuesday..I had the flu and felt like total crap but had a snowstorm on the way and
there was NO way i was calling in when it's my JOB to keep our lot's clear. I loaded up on flu meds and worked
18 hours Tuesday into Wednesday with 2 hours sleep. Which didn't help my flu situation..but feeling better
now..I've been with my small company 8 years, and sometimes yeah have to dig deep and do what u have to
do..It wasn't pleasant and i didn't enjoy it...but got the job done...
I also think it depends on the size of the company one works for in these situations..Working for a smaller
company it's almost like a small family, where we all know what's going on with each other..my 2 cents.

I work in healthcare. The last thing I need to do is bring a sickness to an immuno-compromised patient or a newborn baby. That could kill them.

Before my wife became my wife, she complained bitterly that her employer expected RNs to show up no matter what, even if they were sick. Made no sense to either one of us.

I never want sick employees coming to work. My company supports this. We have posters around the building telling folks to sneeze or cough into tissues or your shoulder, wash hands and STAY HOME (in caps just like that!)

^^^^^ This.

It looks bad to ask for a day off so soon, no matter how legitimate you reason may be. It's better to show that you are making an effort. Let them tell you to go home.

It is very asinine. We are expected to promote health but get yelled at when we take a sick day!

How many sick days does your company allow?

I work in healthcare too. The issue is, you have patients scheduled, how much do they like being called, and cancelled for an appointment they have been waiting a month or more for? Being sick, does not equal contagious, especially if you wear gloves, mask, and practice universal precautions. In rural health care, a patient may have travelled 200 miles or more for an appointment.

Some jobs, you just don't call in sick. You make it until you can leave.

if your temp is totally normal even if you feel awful youre probably ok. ive found that staying home when youre ok otherwise really doesn't do much. i had the worst head cold but temps that were no higher than 98.0

not saying you should go in but youre probably in no real danger. the danger is working when you have a fever or you feel tired and weak. in that case working can make you worse
