I want to know what everyone else thinks about if it's a good idea to mandate working a year in fast food or retail so everyone walks a mile in their shoes and if it will make people appreciate what they do.
Most of us from my generation (I am 38) did that. It was called earning money in high school and college.
I realize the precious flowers of this latest generation don't dirty their hands this way. But most of us have been there and done that.

Exactly. At a young age, I did that too.
But that is why I am really patient with those workers. For the most part, they are KIDS, on their first jobs. Give them a break.
People aren't a-holes because they haven't walked a mile in their fellow citizen's shoes, they are a-holes because their parents taught them to be a-holes.
Some, fortunately, break the cycle, but then another one is born. One problem is that in our society, we don't feel comfortable shaming these anti-social people who tend to go around making everyone they come in contact with miserable.
I also think that it's entirely up to the individual. I used to work at Disney and surprisingly, the most difficult guests I've dealt with were the employees themselves when they visit the park with family. Working there was the ultimate testing of my patience... I was surprised at how fake I can act in the name of customer service. But back to the point, some people are just pricks in general. These same pricks work in retail and I've met many of them. I honestly think that if you work in retail, at least learn how to put up a front and act like you give 2 shts about your job. On the other hand, good customer service can only take you so far... some people will find a fault in you no matter how hard you try. I think people in general just need to lighten up.
Amen to the bolded parts.
When I had a different position with my company, some of the worst customers to deal with were employees.
People are the way they are, and I think that someone working in those jobs would then supply those same people with ammunition to fire off the "Back in my day, I was able to blah blah blah".
People only care about themselves and their situation.. sad.

I do.. I have done this on at least a dozen occasions over the years to people giving cashiers or clerks or etc a hard time.. I wish everyone would do that... Equivalent to punching a bully in the mouth, they usually back off.
I do genuinely think a lot of people act like that because they have no one else to take out their problems on.. Their husband yells at them or tunes them out, their boss is riding them, their kids don't listen, their dog hides from them, so, the only person that has to sit there and take it is their local cashier/barista.
No. Our government would have to have a pretty serious overhaul in order for such a law to be within constitutional guidelines.
Things like this aren't just "mandated."
I think if Obama got his wish to be king for another 8 years he would mandate a year of volunteerism .
