Available overtime is a huge benefit. I would love to work someplace where unlimited OT is available. I would happily take an additional 50% pay increase.
Its only a huge benefit for hourly employees. (And Companies are eyeing this like a hawk more than ever these days ) For Salaried /Exempt, its slavery essentially

Overtime is only for hourly employees. Salaried is just that. Sometime you stay late, other time you leave early.
If you don't like your job then you can either renegotiate the terms of your employment or find another place to work. Simple as that.
Sadly no.. After 10 years in the private sector after graduating college one SHOULD have at least handful of positive work experiences.. But after working for 3 companies they have ALL been negative experiences
so where do you get the views that public employees have it so much better? Because the media doesn't talk about how bad it is for them?
I found there wasn't much change between the two. If I showed up to work, I probably wouldn't even know the difference outside of the security controls. The work is done fairly similarly and the jobs are ran pretty much the same. IE: the difference between a private security guard and a federal one being that the federal ones are also "real" cops while on the federal property, meaning they can arrest people and not just detain/then call cops. The medical staff operates pretty much the same. So do the IT guys and on down the list. Even the janitors/cooks have the same job and don't do things that differently. IE mopping the floors isn't any different on a "private" floor or a "public" floor...
If there are agencies that people are happier in than another, that's just because that place is ran differently. The exact same as how some private company employees are happier at some vs another.
I've seen some of your posts on how private employees work >40 hours... that is a choice. I work OT as a public employee by choice too. I did it as a private employee as well. If you don't like it, then find another job or tell them you can't work it. Why try to paint the entire private sector with your darkened colored glasses? Sure, it isn't a rosy picture but it isn't like private sector is bad either.
The great recession set employees back 40 years. I have noticed employers asking us to do more with less than ever before. Right now at work, I do jobs that were normally done by 3 people. It's time that we, as employees, stand up and fight back for our rights. I welcome those greedy, dirty unions. May the lesser evil prevail.
Is someone forcing you to work for a company you don't like?
You can always start your own company and employe people and give all the money to the employees instead of yourself.
Well said.
I'm sorry, but I'm pretty tired of people complaining about all the injustice in the workplace... If you're not happy for working for "company X", then move on!! Find another job that's a better fit for you, your needs and views. The last time I checked, nobody is forcing you to work for that "evil" corporation AND nobody is knocking on your door ordering you to report to your next shift at gunpoint.
...If your boss or a co-worker is knocking on your door or making several calls to your phone after failing to show up for work, their just making sure that you're OK, not injured or dead... I don't see that as being an evil or unjust thing to do... IMHO!!
There are plenty of small Mom & Pop businesses/operations out there if you have a problem with working for a corporation. But, be prepared to be paid less and receive fewer benefits... On an average.
I worked for a couple of large organizations and I, as well as my my co-workers were treated very well in the workplace. Plus, given plenty of opportunities to move forward to earn a bigger paycheck and better benefits. NEVER did I feel like a slave or a sub-class citizen... I think that a lot of younger, as well as some older workers, don't understand that "THEY" are not the main priority in the workplace since a business has deadlines to meet, in order to survive AND that is where the priority goes because if you don't meet those "evil" deadlines, you may not have a job SINCE there is always another business, "company Y," willing AND ready to step in and meet those deadlines when somebody can't.
IMHO, I feel that way too many people bought into all the 99% or Occupy Wall Street or the "us verse them" B.S. or listened to a college professor way too much who basically have "ZERO" real life experiences outside of a control environment of a college/university campus. With that being the said, I also feel that many use that as an excuse for not meeting their own/family/friends expectations for whatever stage in life they are in... It's way easier to blame others for your failures than to take responsibility and correct them... IMHO
If anybody thinks that a workplace under communism or socialism is better than under the current American system, capitalism, please talk to somebody that actually worked in the "former" Soviet Union or any of their "former" satellite countries and ask them what "system" they would rather work in.
Do you think people realize that the private sector (Mainly corporations) are chalked full of corrupt jerks engaged in cronyism and nepotism while ripping off the "lower levels" to make themselves richer ??
Bless your heart you're so confused; the government is not part of the private sector.
Why were there so many revolutions and challenges to the "Establishment" in the past and today people are willing to just bend over? Where is the backbone of people today?
I was with you until this ☝☝
What are you doing? When are you starting your movement? Where is your backbone?
In the public sector there is only an extent to which you can be abused by management these days. Its a far cry from the private sector to where it was deemed "Corporations are people" and they can essentially get away with anything they want
I beg to differ. Look at the ways in which the current administration uses its various federal agencies to go after those it deems political opponents, ignores laws, court orders, and the will of its employers, the people.
And government agencies'decrees are legislative, punitive measures imposed by the government include fines and jail time. People are afraid of this and tend to cowtow to government agencies and their employees even when they know the government agencies and their representatives are twisting the laws into decrees not intended by the law, and are abusing their authority. So they most often get away with it. And the government representatives act as though they are accountable to no one for their actions or the consequences, because most often they are not.
Private corporations do not have this power. Unless, of course, their lobbyists have the representatives of the government in their pockets.
I must say, in way of disclaimer, that not all government employees act as though they get off on their 15 minutes of power over the populace. There are any number of them who are professional in every way and really see themselves as public servants. But those others, we all know they are there.
