Seriously the key to presents at Christmas is not what you receive from others, its what you give to others---WITHOUT THE EXPECTATION OF RECEIVING ANYTHING IN RETURN.
Nice platitude. But actually, the whole point of a Secret Santa exchange is that it is an EXCHANGE. So there is an expectation of receiving a gift in return.

I'm the poorest person in the office by FAR. I need to get over it lol. Maybe I was just a bad person this year and it's karma biting me in the butt. Last year I got a kick ass adult coloring book that sparked my interest in coloring so much that I bought a giant pack of color pencils and now color for relaxation. The only other year I think where I thought my gift sucked was when it was a giant chocolate bar, but it was a giant chocolate bar and good chocolate. Not a candy cane. I haven't even gotten the person I chose for secret santa yet their gift yet but i'm so pissy about my gift that now I have no desire to pick out something nice for the person I chose :/ I should just recycle my gift and give that person a candy cane! But I wouldn't do that.

You know...

A gift is a gift. Not an obligation. You have something you didn't have before. Your attitude is kind of sucky.

Sorry, but a gift is an obligation if you enroll in a gift exchange. Don't like it? Don't sign up for the gift exchange. Very simple.

It would be different if it were just some random friend who decided to give him a gift.

Totally not the case, at ALL. trust me on this. When someone spends like 20 bucks a day ordering in lunch... nah!

This is merely your assumption since you really do not know the truth about their financial situation.
Receiving a gift, no matter what it is should be appreciated even if you think it is a *crappy gift* which actually matches your attitude...

It's a Christmas miracle! PrincessVanilla and I actually agree on something for once!

You're 100% right! The WHOLE point of a Secret Santa is the gift exchange. If someone wants a candy cane or a card, then they can go to the mall and grab one from Santa or buy a box of them at the dollar store. I can't even imagine giving someone a candy cane as a gift! As a joke, yes. Not as a gift.

Seriously? Are you the Secret Santa who gives candy canes as the gift? It's a gift EXCHANGE! Who wouldn't be upset?

32 years of federal service, and ONE time I participated. That was plenty for me. Who needs the drama.

7 more work days.

Wow! If I was in a bad financial situation, the last thing I would do is sign up for a Secret Santa gift exchange at work.

And every gift exchange I've been involved in, required you to give something of a similar value in order to receive a gift yourself. If you didn't play fair, you weren't allowed in the gift exchange anymore or even be asked to forfeit your own gift.

But the secret santa gift I got today wasn't wrapped it was just dropped on my desk with a post it saying "secret santa # 2". So I have no idea if it was the person who gave me the candy cane or another coworker who heard me bitchin'. lol either way, it's kinda funny. I quite enjoy my new gift
