Actually, I did it pretty soon, like within the first day or so, but the reason was so that a job started in August or so could ensure that I was able to get off the day after Christmas for something preplanned or that would stink if I had to change it. I actually thought it was responsible and would look responsible to show that I was willing to try and get the go ahead early on so that I could plan if they said no than to, say, try a week or so before the actual day I needed off, only to find out I couldn't and that I had already spent money or made plans that pretty much made it inevitable, putting me into a position where it would be a pain in the butt to have to change plans or that would even make it tempting to blow off work on said day I planned off.
