  • I believe it is important to note that Gardner operates under a Public Safety system. What this means is that the police officers are also the Firefighters. Currently there is one person designated as the on duty firefighter for the city. This person works a shift that is 8 hours in length instead of the normal 24 hour shift throughout the rest of the KC metro area. The designated fire officer is supplemented by volunteers and other available police officers which normally there are three onduty. Gardner is the only city in the area that still is a true public safety model. There are benefits in tax savings with this model but downfall is reduced available personnel if you have an emergency.
