Well, I'm actually from Minnesota. If the weather weren't so horrible, I'd prefer it to AZ. But then I handle heat well and not cold. The Twin Cities consistently rank in most desirable places to live - good school systems (AZ is ranked the dumbest state in the nation, if those things matter to you as a parent), there are 10,000 REAL lakes with LOTS of fish in them, not to mention how wonderful it is to walk around a REAL lake with shady trees. Mpls ranks high in the arts and culture, blah blah blah. It's very clean and good for families. Low crime rate, until they opened the welfare doors out of their liberal hearts some years back and screwed things up. If the weather would stay like May year round, it'd be MUCH better than AZ.

I think everyone judges Arizona on Phoenix. There are many other nice suburban cities to live in. I'm not sure what the purpose of this post is, but it sure makes a lot of generalizations about a state that has many great cities.
Fair and balanced reporting, just like Bill O'Really says...the no spin zone.

Or, maybe I just want to keep the secret to myself so more people won't move here

I came across something very interesting. Turns out, as reported in 1/07 (the article is from 1/07 but you have to read the article itself to to see how 301K was derived) that 301K moved to AZ. Of these, 134K were due to international migration, whatever that means. I assume it means as in people coming to phoenix from other countries. Now, I don't know what that does to the argument that everyone (presumably in the US?) wants to live here.
********************************8
These figures represent migration, those on the left internal migration, and those on the right, interational migration. Almost half of Phoenix's growth is coming from outside of the U.S.

Let's see how the net internal immigration metro areas do on this score:

Phoenix, Ariz. 301,150/ 134,412
Las Vegas, Nev. 219,112/ 52,899
Tampa, Fla. 201,715//47,022
Atlanta, Ga. 185,603, 144,564
Orlando, Fla. 178,083, 50,685
Sacramento, Calif. 129,400, 50,732
Dallas-Fort Worth, Tex. 100,167/ 232,235
Charlotte, N.C./S.C. 95,652, 33,849
Fort Myers, Fla. 93,478 10,075
Sarasota, Fla. 82,567 10,701
Jacksonville, Fla. 82,264 11,541
Raleigh, N.C. 75,765 27,150
Austin, Tex. 74,882 47,204
San Antonio, Tex. 66,334 27,063
Houston, Tex. 62,875 210,440
Fort Pierce, Fla. 59,489 5,065
Stockton, Calif. 54,561 17,183
Melbourne, Fla. 54,150 3,855

Sorry for the formatting, but as you can see, in Dallas there is more international immigration than net internal migration.

Oh well, I think it's interesting and gives a better breakdown as to who is really moving to Phoenix.

I don't think any of those fly at you! At least when you see them crawling, you can move out of their way....

Can someone post some actual data or links on the web showing how Phoenix crime rates are high? Current data only, 2005 or later.

I have lived in several places in CA, both North and South and had first-hand knowledge of more crime, mostly property and theft, there than my experiences in Phoenix.

Trust me, So Cal has WAY more crime then Phoenix. Your car might be stolen in Phoenix but it is more likely you will get gunned down in Los Angeles. I have to look at the stats but the L.A. area prob has more murders this 1st half of the year then Phoenix had all of last year.

I would consider both Chandler and Gilbert nice areas to live in. If I had a choice I would take Gilbert...I was going to move to Gilbert before the location of my Job Change to the NW Valley. So I bought in Surprise. My dad says I live in the sticks. So far Very quiet and nice the see teenagers walking down the street without them cussing/threatening you...which is my experience in Cal.

Anyways, here is the L.A. death Map

I saw Chandler on the national news tonight. They are looking for a serial rapist. What is it with the serial crimes in Phx?

Beverly Hills, Burbank and Culver City don't look too bad. I bet the Phoenix map looks just as bad.

These livability rankings closely mirror the life expectancies in the 50 states. The northern tier states (at the top of this list) have the longest life expectancies while the southern tier (at the bottom of this list) have the shortest. Despite my differences with this survey, there must be something to it using this comparison. Just my two cents.

Though no place on earth is going to be completely crime free, there are many areas still where the 'good ol boy' lifestyle still exists no one feels they are superior to the other. I love the midwest and southern states, despite the weather conditions. Folks out there really are very hospitable, friendly. Basically your choice is the friendly down-home folks or the higher end (or as other people call them, the 'snooty' people in some areas) and the extreme weather, but again, its a toss up, to each their own.
