I assumed he lived in the bible belt. I have never seen that in my neck of the woods: Bethesda, Montgomery County, just outside the DC line. I would not want to live in a place like that.
Having lived in the D.C. area most of my life, I would remind you that you don't get very far south of D.C. before you are already in the bible belt.
What makes you think that this is what you are getting when you ask the state to stay out of religion and religion to stay out of the state.
The devil is on the details and who is in charge. I agree there should be a separation of church and state. But, I am not in favor of creating a secret police to search for those that dare to break the rules. THis is not a straw man, but I can deduct this when i see someone that is very zealous.

Actually, over the past couple of years that I've been on here, quite a few posters have argued that religion is not on the way out at all.
What I see in most western countries in the future is a juxtaposition of a large irreligious demographic alongside a fairly large increasingly devout religious demographic. Significantly but not exclusively non-Christian. I also see those who are still Christian emboldened by the rise of assertive non-Christian faiths that the Christians will react to in a me-too kind of way.

Hungary and Poland have become more religious because they fear the competition of Islam. Tribalism is very real.

I have teens and it is interesting to see religious consciousness creeping back, as kids discuss it way more these days. As in peer pressure à la "I am Religion X, what are you?"
We never talked about religion when I was growing up in the 80s and 90s.
