I think that you are missing the point. Having good access to the NE corridor is good for recreational trips and also business. That corridor is by far the most populated in the country and such transit makes it's "closer."

Going in other directions would be good too, but there's simply more benefit to having access to the North.

1. The northeast is one direction

2. Atlanta location is set to hub the southeast if Charlotte don't connect to Atlanta, the northeast will be the only direction you can go from North Carolina.

3. Even with high speed rail to the northeast, NC cities are not BosWosh, NC is not apart BosWosh economic region. NC cities connected with Atlanta as a emerging mega region. It's actually more important for both states to connect to each other than either of the states going another way.

4. lets say someone from NC wanted to go to LA now they got to go up the east coast to the Midwest then southwestward. If someone from NY wanted go to Houston now there's no point of going to the NC cities at all. In fact they won't even be able to go to Florida either.

5. Don't pity Georgia if high speed rail don't comes to Atlanta in our life time. Pity the south Atlantic as a whole. Pity NC for being a dead end with no logistic advantage for high speed rail to travel though.

Yes, you're correct that North Georgia lies near the center of the geographic southeast. I never thought of high-speed rail's mission as an economic engine for transfer points. I hope that it succeeds in transporting people faster to nearby cities that are too close for airspace to handle additional short-haul flights, and highways already at capacity.

Trust me, NC doesn't need anyone's pity. The state has its future planned for the next 100 years, and is aggressively building new highways, byways, railways and ferry-ways. You can measure the progress almost weekly. NC has received $600 million so far for high-er speed rail improvements and will split the remaining cost equally with VA to revive an abandoned track from Norlina to Richmond.

You are thinking one sided. Its more of a benefit for N.C./VA than it is for people in the D.C. area to go South.Especially if it does not connect to Atlanta.Atlanta is the economic center of the region.People coming to live or work in Atlanta would eventually be able to take a train to Charlotte,Raleigh,Nashville,or even New Orleans.I can imagine a train going to N.O would be very profitable.

I'm not thinking one sided, just noting the massive significance of NE corridor and access to it. That's all. I would think that's a given, but apparently not.

Again access to thr N.E. corridor is a given plus. But what about the access the South/Southeast.I dont see a major benefit without Atlanta being in that loop.I can dare say most business and other ties by far is done in Atlanta by Northeastern companies than any train that just goes to Charlotte or Raleigh alone. Its in Charlotte's and N.C.(as well as Atlanta's)to tie into each other first as it already has as a region, and become stronger connections to makt the whole region more appealing.

Yes but I was commenting on the point made about NC specifically. Obviously it would be good for Atlanta too, and it's very frustrating how little our state is doing to be a part of rail.

Silver Spring and Bethesda are more urban than most of the D.C. proper, high end shopping in an urban fashion is in Chevy Chase, MD. Fed Ex field (Redskins stadium), Six Flags, College Park, water access and maybe soon casinos are all in Prince George's County.
This part is not really correct. DC's premier harbor is the Washington Harbor in Georgetown. It's a worthy competitor to National Harbor here in my home county.

Washington D.C. will arguably be the best waterfront city in the nation in a few years so that poster is way out of bounds:
