''The University System of Georgia Board of Regents voted to request $45 million in bond funding in Fiscal Year 2014 for a planned $100 million cancer center at GHSU. The school also received a $20 million pledge toward the building from a grateful cancer patient.''

He needs the help of the government, community, and local philanthropist to reach the goal.
What I'm about to say is probably going to **** a lot of you off. Mathman is half right. Nobody really cares what some crazies in Augusta think. The power the decisions come from Atlanta..not Augusta. Like you said it's a cult few who are really fired up about this whole thing. Augusta residents don't know any better. They just feel like some yankee is changing everything.

And yeah Azziz may be a jerk, but what Azziz is doing is good for a lot of the STUDENTS there. Trust me, I know quite a few med students there. The commons building was widely appreciated and the few students that actually graduate from ASU should be proud that their name gets affiliated with GHSU. Augusta residents need to find something to do. Take up golf. Isn't the masters tour coming?

Sure he may be outlandish the way he conducts business..but I mean he's just looking out for himself, his constituents and his school. Just like anyone else would do. Why are y'all so bent out of shape? Unless I'm missing something

A friend at GHSU nursing says they're also expecting an increase in tuition. Can anyone comment on this?

What are you talking about? The entire state is taxed..not just metro Atlanta.

Also I have some questions, does anyone know around where GRU will target students? As in, will they try to get the ASU kids? The GSU-KSU kids? The UGA-GT kids? What? Will they even focus on undergrad studies? Augusta State was an academic cesspool. Was this merger just for money or do they intend to fix the former ASU undergrad program?

I'm just wondering what impact it may have on the shape of the USG. I mean.. ole' Ricardo has already said he needs and wants to increase ASU's standards. I'm just wondering where the standards will fall? I've heard dental and medical staff and students sort of sweat over the idea of being associated with ASU's crowd.

Also, can one apply to GRU starting this cycle or next cycle? As in, what happens to students who applied to ASU that AREN'T in the perimeter of special admission(basically the dumb people in Augusta get a freebee to ASU just because there isn't any school around...that they could get into)

I'm a little confused on how this is going to affect students.

I think GRU will try to sit somewhere just above Georgia State or next to Georgia State.

I'd say a 3.5 GPA and around a 25 average SAT score is reasonable(3.3 GPA and 22 ACT is about the avg at GSU), but it'll take some time to build up to that level. The thing is, GRU isn't going to suddenly boast incredible undergraduate programs or a high ranking.

The undergraduate programs at GRU will really be ASU programs under a new name. So I don't think we're going to suddenly see students picking GRU over GSU, KSU or Southern. Maybe students from Augusta who would normally attend another school will stay at GRU. ASU's BS-MD program is about two months old. I don't know a whole lot about it. Basically if you have a 1400 SAT score and a 3.7 or 3.9 GPA then you have the opinion to enroll. I'm not sure what the requirement is once you're in the program, or if they have to take the MCAT.

I believe people will still be applying to ASU for fall 2013. Then after they will probably apply to GRU.

To be honest, I think they should just get to the USG average(which as you said is right above GSU)

I don't think the UGA and Georgia Tech dominated BOR would be so willing to enable a fourth competitive undergrad school.

So basically I guess this consolidation is going to be a little more than a change in banners. A lot of fuss Augusta residents put up for nothing.

That fuss was precisely about the change in banners and name. There really isn't that much opposition to the merger itself, only Azziz and the manner in which the merger was was carried out...and of course the name itself.
