When Ford redesigned the Taurus back in 1996 they had amber rear turn signal lenses. Looked like crap, got changed back to red for 1997.

I've seen some BMW cars having amber color but on a red lens matching the back lights which is kind of cool, and it still showed amber color.

red turn signals and red brake lights was never a good idea. Differentiation is key in quick-glance safety.

Other bad ideas in the American automotive world (this is in NYS, your state might be more enlightened):
-Having the entrance ramp coming onto a highway before the exit ramp on highways rather than the other way around. Causes all sorts of unnecessary hassle for drivers.
-Not having cheap-as-hell cats eyes on highways defining the center line and shoulder.
-permitting cars to park within 15ft either side of pedestrian crossings

I could go on.

Driver is approaching an intersection in the right lane when he suddenly realizes that he wants to turn left at that intersection; he puts on his brakes and simultaneously activates his left turn signal. You, following a short distance behind but in the left lane, see three red lights. You assume that he's slowing down, perhaps to turn right, and continue forward at your same speed. Then, you see that the light on the left goes off, then back on.

Sure, it's only a split second of uncertainty. But in that split second, you would continue forward, thus making it that much harder for the other driver to merge in ahead of you before reaching the intersection -- and increasing the risk that he will just barrel his way in, possibly causing you to rear-end him, or come to a sudden stop so that you can get ahead of him, and risk being rear-ended by the car following him in the right lane.

Amber turn signals make the distinction between braking and turning very clear, instantly. You, the following driver, will be able to immediately adjust your own driving (probably by slowing down, in this case) and avoid a potentially hazardous situation.

If you prefer red turn signals for aesthetic reasons, then fine, just say so. But I think it's a stretch to say that there's no difference in how the following driver perceives them, as compared to amber signals.

OP is probably going to hate me but I put red vinyl over my rear amber turn signals to clean up the look. Now my rear lights are all red vs mostly red with a shade of amber

$5 ebay special

Seeing as it looks OEM and red turn signals are not illegal I'm pretty certain I'm safe

See image below. LEFT: OEM from factory. RIGHT: With new red tails (I kept my backup light clear white)

Another example of after look:

Let's just say a cop would have to have a photographic memory of this specific Lexus model to tell it apart from OEM

Maybe. I just know my kid got a ticket for doing it. Of course he did it to hide a broken lens he was too cheap to replace.

You're right, your car looked bad with yellow lights.
