Someone who cannot detect the difference between 35 and 77 does not belong behind the wheel.

I'm a slow learner. It took me until my early 50's to break the habitual speeder thing. I've always viewed speeding tickets as an opportunity cost. I was willing to risk the ticket and the insurance surcharge to roll along at speed limit plus 20 with the radar detector on. I typically had big commutes. I had multi-hour drives most weekends to do leisure activities. If you're doing 20+ hours per week in a car, reducing that by 20% adds up. Speed limit + 20 was worth the opportunity cost. The Great Recession happened and enforcement tightened up dramatically to create the revenue source. I gave up. I'm now on adaptive cruise control at speed limit plus 9 on the highway and at the speed limit on secondary roads. I have no clue where my radar detector is. I'd much rather be speeding but the risk of all those insurance surcharges is simply too great these days.
People! Please pay attention. The OP is not talking about an Interstate highway! Comparing a local road to an interstate in SD doesn't make any sense.
It does in the context that 85 in a 65 zone in Virginia gets you a reckless driving charge. Lots of snowbirds roll through the state on their 24 hour drive to and from Florida and get nailed in the middle of nowhere Virginia on an empty road with a reckless driving charge. It generates an enormous amount of revenue. Virginia doesn't care that a misdemeanor driving conviction is going to cost the out-of-state driver $1,000/year for a half dozen years. They just want the ticket revenue.
Reckless driving at speed limit + 20 is a bit severe, in my opinion.
With that logic, we might as well make speed limits about 5 mph. No damage to anyone in the case of an accident and everyone is safer. Physics, right?
You can still squash a kid who darts out in the road when you're doing 35 mph, too, if the kid does it closer to the car.
So lets petition to make all speed limits 5 mph or less. I mean, think of the children!
And to the OP, the only way you would have thought that 77 was almost 35 was if you had been doing 120 right before than, so that 77 felt like a crawl...
35 is the speed deemed safe for that section of road. It's a trade off. Going 77 in a 35 won't allow for imperfections in the road, curves, or anticipated foot traffic.
At 77 in a 35 you will cover twice the distance before being able to even react to a threat, that's the point.
And yes, we do push the speed limits down at times children will be present (you have been in the general area of a school and seen the signs that lower a speed limit to 15 or 25 when children are present).
I rear ended a pickup with my Integra GSR, a car I really really like. This really discouraged me, I'm repairing it now.

Virginia traffic enforcement laws are nothing but a racket, whether that's the VSP or local authorities. I go on the Wilderness Road from eastern KY into southwest VA every month or so and as soon as you get on the VA side, there come the cops.
So on Friday at 2:55 I got pulled over by an officer of Fairfax city. He used the radar to determine I was going 77 mph in a 35mph zone, this is my first time pulled over. I've had my license for almost 3 years now if not already. My record is clean and I have plus 3 points. I'm 20 years old. I've been freaking out and feel like crying. I know I messed up. Being completely honest with you guys I didn't realize I was going that fast. I know it sounds stupid but I'm telling you guys the truth. I work full time and go to school on Tuesday and Thursday after work. I have never had any problems with the law. What do you guys think the court will do to me for the reckless driving ticket with the things I've told you.

Get a lawyer who will 'plea bargain' the ticket down to something more manageable. It will cost you some money but it may be worth it compared to a fine or other penalty and increased insurance.
35mph might be in a residential zone or a light commercial zone.......but hey, FWY drivers are doing 65-75 all day long....at least they know the difference.

Your record is no longer clean, sad to say. 77 mph in a 35 mph zone is extremely fast, way beyond the speed limit. Frankly, I am concerned that you had "no idea" how fast you were going. That is something you should be able to just "feel," and as you mature, you likely will.
