Haackman, thanks for the good peppermint & water trick. I will be glad to hear any advice that works. Raising pigs could also work for you as well as kids to butcher later, then you dont have to hunt. Just pen them in if you want to keep them. You might also be surprised that Big Island, does not have the most reliable car mechanics, anything YOU can do will save you money and aggravation, waiting and waiting; it can also be another source of income for you depending on how much you know and create your own clientele.

That should be a clue. A big clue.

FWIW I use T-Mobile, because their customer service is phenomenal, and I get 4 bars and very high speed wireless internet and cell phone coverage on my property in Volcano, and everywhere else I habituate.

Assume nothing about coverage, however. I checked out the actual reception pattern before I bought, because it was critical to my plans. At a friend's house only 1,000' up the road, the reception is 1 bar, barely, because of some high ground between him and the tower.

OK I am back!! Merry Christmas!!

So is there a scrapyard on the big island? If so any idea where it is?

I have been reading alot about the trash issues. Is there no dump nearby or are there alot of people that are lazy and wont go? I am in Alabama and we have hundreds of lil' hick hop dump sites from lazy people not wanting to transport their waste...lots of metal, tires and such.

What is the average soil depth in the forest? Are there people using simple leech field septic?

Last question...lol...the weather reports keep the wind at about 7 miles an hour on average. I have been told that the wind always blows in from the south to the NE because of the trade winds. Is this a fact the wind does not change direction? If so it would be a seemingly perfect place for turbines. They last longer and are much more productive both output and cost versus solar. I just havent seen anyone using them.

Well thanks again guys!!! You all have a Merry Christmas!

Here is a history of the weather so far this month:

History : Weather Underground

As you can see on the bottom chart, the wind direction is pretty variable, with lots of times from the southeast and lots from the southwest. "Always" is not the case.

There is a wind farm (9 Megawatts) at South Point that has been operating for almost twenty five years, with plans to increase the capacity to 20 Megawatts:

Wind - history (http://hawaii.gov/dbedt/ert/wwg/history.html - broken link)

There are also a large number of wind machines operating at Lalamilo
Wells, Hawaii, but I don't know where that is.

Default Haackman, Play Land

Haackman, in the forest you may be dismayed to learn that we have but 6 to 10 inches in some places at best. But no worries, for about $240. you can have a dump truck load of good soil delivered to your parcel. That should be good news. As for the scrap yard, Glenwood has a free dump to roam around at your heart's content. It is a small dump, wear good hiking boots to prevent foot problems. (taxes make it free), On the Kona side about 10 miles N of the Kona Airport, lies an enormous dump with every thing the island can muster. Your heart will be warmed to see it. Ah Septic tanks, try googling Septic Tank Companies Puna Hawaii.

And before I forget again; WELCOME HOME SOLDIER, TO AMERICA !

Hi. I'm in Volcano, about 26miles from the Hilo dump. I actually go down to the Hilo dump with an empty truck, to load up on free organic compost. They take everything for recycling there, from HI 5 bottle deposit returns to wrecked automobiles and appliances. And the organic waste is composted there. The last load I got was unusually sweet smelling. Turns out it is full of noni fruit that did not completely break down. (Before anyone makes a trip, call for hours and days of operation, which change around the holidays. And sorry, the compost is all gone until February.)

Going downhill, there is a recycling and transfer center just south of Volcano (currently open T, Th and Sat), another one in Glenwood, and another in Keaau. The county has them all over the island. Check the .gov website for locations.

Average soil depth up here in the rainforest is 6" of loamy soil, over 6" of hardpack, average, over prehistoric lava. Perc tests are about the lowest you can register, but the cracks in the lava allow septic systems to work, albeit very slowly. Digging for a septic tank and leach field are best done by a power hammer on a back hoe. Figure $5 grand. Cesspools are no longer permitted.

I went another way, with a composting toilet and greywater leach field, which is much, much simpler and cheaper. But my caveat is that the county is still behind the curve in understanding greywater systems, and currently demands the work be done by a licensed professional.

The prevailing winds in my neighborhood in Volcano are from the NE, which keeps the Kiluea vog blowing south (ie., away from) here most of the time. Hawai'i is full of microclimes, so you have to check specifics. Here we get an average of 100" of rain a year (2" last night), but the Puna/Ka'u border is only a mile south of here, and it's a climate ridge. On the other side it rapidly turns into desert.

From pounding the plants you are trying to grow. Black Shade Cloth is hung like a tarp and diffuses the rain so it gently sprinkels the growth underneath. A green house may be over kill. Like are you expecting freezing temps ?

A greenhouse is not overkill. In fact, it is a necessity if you want to grow real tomatoes, bell peppers, and many other vegetables due to the insidious fruit fly among the many other pests. The greenhouse keeps them out.

Hey if you got the money to buy a green house, by all means, knock yourself out. Here is a link to a whole sale business in Hawaii. Personally, I will never forget the tripped out Green House of Dr. Hineman in Minority Report, ( film by Steven Spielberg ) . The Pitcher Plants that were hung from above in the film would probably do very well in Hawaii but it is doubtful that Agriculture would let them on to the Island.
