Admittedly and obviously, I don't approve of mass-marketing campaigns and roadside billboards for religion. I find it distasteful and very disturbing.
Where we agree to disagree is that one does not have a right to not be offended, and the signs (any signs) do not need your or my approval.
I can think of all types of advertising and billboards I personally do not care for, but would not spend the energy to complain about them.
That is my version of 'live and let live'.

Everyone has skeletons.
And in keeping with my theme and in the spirit of consistency.....
For god's sake woman, Skeletons In The Closet are NOT exclusive to Southerners
Up north, we have closets in our closets ....to store back up skeletons that need to remain in backup closets, lol
Hell, we even have skeletons on a waiting list; to occupy closet space not currently available, lol.

Nobody wants to save the church - it's a loss. It is just the sign.
It is quirky and a part of the local lore, so even if it is not beautiful . . . it is worth saving as a part of this history of signage in the region.
I agree - not everything that is old is worth the $$$ to save it - just like the church. It is a goner and needs to be bulldozed.
These people are killing me
They obviously only want to argue. The links I posted clearely explain that it is the SIGN folks want to save, not the old chuch - which is beyond saving.
The Jesus Saves sign is iconic, and while not "beautiful" in the traditional sense, is important to the community it has reigned over for 80 years.
Somehow it always ends in a war of words between Northerners and Southerners. To both, it gets boring after a while. “Embrace your new home for what it has to offer, embrace the new arrivals, for what they bring”.

OK, well that answers my question about the church. I read the links the other day & it didn't seem clear whether the building was structurally beyond rehabbing. I was serious, though, about trying to get a group together.
If you felt that I was arguing, I'm sorry. I stated upfront that that was not my intention.

hey, no worries my friend, I don't lump you in with those looking to argue here, so no apology is necessary

I like that - nicely said
And part of "embracing your new home" is to learn its history, the story of the people who were there before you.
This would be a good place to remind newcomers that the Levine Museum of the New South is a fantastic place to learn a lot of Charlotte's history!

The right to be offended? That's funny.
When did I say I was offended? There's a difference between distasteful and disturbing. And offended.
But you're wrong. People by nature can and will be offended about anything that offends them. Is that a right? I don't know. Do you have a right to tell me or anyone esle what we can be offended by? Sure you can disagree. But who are you to tell people what they can feel and can not feel? What they can think and can't think?
Yeah, talk about staying classy What really applies is this.....One has the right to be offended. But they don't have a right to intrude, oppress or violate another's rights, just because they're offended.
I never said they needed my approval. Nor do I have to approve of them.
Yet, you don't see me launching a campaign against them, either.
Certainly, one can argue that this country was built on the premise of not promoting or advocating or oppressing any religion, whatsoever.

Very well put.
When it comes to southerners and northerners, probably ought to add:
TOLERANCE and BENEFIT OF DOUBT - we can even be saying the same things but b/c we put them in different frames of reference, we sometimes misunderstand one another, lol.

Speaking of history, if you can get to the nearest NC Welcome Center, look for the May issue of The Historical News. The issue that they have is for Guilford county, but there is a long article on the Mendenhall family. The family in that area comes from one of my ancestors. It's not Charlotte history, but it is Piedmont history.
