No need to. Truth is not limited to a culture.

How does one decide what verses get the cultural context test and which ones just apply to the 21st century from the start?
They can use my method---there is no cultural context, just read what it says.

That's right.

And depending on the owners - the experience was not always bad... the slave was not always mistreated.

This is evangelical rationalization at its best folks.

THERE WERE HAPPY SLAVES, WHY DID FREEDOM HAVE TO GO AND RUIN THAT????

How can a slave NOT be mistreated when they have no FREEDOM to leave???

This is why people see evangelicals as idiots, fools, fracktards, and cowards...

WHITE PRIVILEGE LIVES!!

So there is evangelical cultural bias and there is NOT evangelical cultural bias?

Some churchgoers say SLAVERY GOOD, some churchgoers say SLAVERY BAD.

So when is slavery (or rape, or misogyny, discrimination and even murder) acceptable to the evangelical god and even to evangelicals themselves?

Seems some are at peace with these crimes, while others will condemn the crimes but not make any attempt to stop the crimes from occurring because it must be their god's will?

Then you need to campaign to end banks that give loans and other creditors. Because that is more akin to the slavery in the OT.

Then with your logic that God is perfectly fine with beating a slave, why would this verse even exist? Your interpretation stubbornly REFUSES to look at cultural context and doesn't even align with the rest of the Bible.

The bottom line is you can not find a SINGLE verse where God directly says that He approves of slavery.

Traffic in slaves is no more condemned than olive oil. Where does the bolded addition to scripture come from? It seems to be a commentary on the Greek "and souls of men," which only receives condemnation in our own minds.
it is MSG, but even in another translation, the conflation with souls and barter should not be dismissed imo. A bible search of the terms slave, slavery would make this much clearer, what God thinks about slavery

Bible Search: slave
Bible Search: slavery

at the end of which no thinking person could imagine that God condones slavery imo.

Something's wrong with you...

All I'm saying is that like most things in life... it's not all bad, and it's not all good.

Slavery is not a good option. But I am not ready to proclaim all slave owners as guilty of harsh treatment just because they are slave owners.

Being that many of the Jews did have a fear of God - they probably took that fear into how they dealt with their slaves.

I know this is challenging the programming put in our heads that any person for all of eternity who owned slaves is guilty of beating, raping, and killing their property.

A woman raised Catholic in India who brings the Hindu influences on Christianity to the discussion. A few cradle Episcopalians. Good conversations.
oh. in that group, it should have a shot. i would be curious how they receive it
