I like our arctic Christmases in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Even though it's excessively cold, both downtowns around Christmas and through winter are amazing. There are lights everywhere, and the Holidazzle Parade through downtown Minneapolis, and the St. Paul Winter Carnival. Its not comparable to anywhere else. The Mall of America and Southdale are completely set up for christmas and the Downtown Minneapolis Macy's has a special Christmas thing on its 8th floor.

I actually have a story from downtown St. Paul a couple days before Christmas 2 years ago. Some people and I went to a play at a theater in downtown, and afterwards at about 9, when we walked out the door towards the Landmark Center (the old building in the second st Paul picture),the sky was overcast, and there was a fresh, 3 inch layer of snow on the ground and it was snowing those big light snowflakes that were floating slowly down, and the trees were lit up and people in coats were walking down the sidewalks, but it was completely silent other than a distant, crackly speaker from somewhere in downtown playing White Christmas. It was.. Odd, but so cool. It doesn't really explain itself in words

Also, when I was looking for pictures of those buildings, I came across the pictures of Minneapolis during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, when the city lights up pink.

They also light up the I35W Bridge orange on Halloween, green on St. Patricks Day, rainbow on Gay Pride Day, red, white and blue on memorial day and the 4th of july, etc.

Haven't been to NYC, but I've been to Chicago multiple times over the years, and I must say that the city is very beautiful during the holidays. They light nearly every damn tree in the city and the Macy's window tradition is always a big plus.

Being from California, the traditional Christmas spirit does lack a little compared to some of the more dressed up Northeast/Midwest cities, but it does create a vibe all its own. A vibe that is not necessarily better or worse, just different.
