The developer is shooting for an Oct/Nov start...it looks pretty solid that it might happen by then. The second phase would be a 68-floor hotel/apartment tower, but that isn't likely for a while if ever.

"The second tower, a 68-story structure still early in the design concept, could include a luxury hotel and apartments, she said. The developers are in talks with high-end restaurants, a grocer and luxury spa and fitness center operators." http://www.ajc.com/news/business/74-...atlanta/nrx2D/

Good article about the redevelopment of the Navy Yard in Philadelphia: The Coolest Shipyard in America - POLITICO Magazine

It was a major lose to the city when Washington decided to build new ports for the nuclear submarines in Virginia instead of upgrading the Philadelphia yard. Our Senator's from both sides of the aisle called it "the war on Pennsylvania". As the article points out, it was the Navy's very first shipyard and was responsible for repairing the frigates used in the war of 1812. By WWII, 47,000 workers packed the docks making it for a time the largest naval shipyard in the world. It was also the site of the uranium enrichment portion of the Manhattan Project. So it had a long valuable history serving this country and was a kick in the stomach when the military abandoned it. But after 21 years, it has been revived pretty nicely.

Quote:
Twenty-one years later, the 1,200-acre Navy Yard is booming. At the base of Pier 6, a thousand workers are assembling 50,000-ton tankers at a state-of-the-art $400 million, Norwegian-owned commercial shipyard. Thousands more work in swank new office and laboratory buildings a quarter-mile to the west that house T-cell cancer therapy researchers, investment advisors and a large chunk of drug giant GlaxoSmithKline’s North American operations. There’s a brand new 4.5-acre park designed by renowned landscape architect James Corner (of New York City High Line fame), with a running track, ping pong tables and hammocks among the benches and Adirondack chairs; a trendy Marc Vetri restaurant in one of the base’s former gatehouses; and, across a canal, the teeming 340,000-square foot Tastykake bakery, an iconic Philadelphia institution
Quote:
When fully built out over the next decade, backers expect the Yard will become a second Center City—a commercial hub for businesses ill-suited to downtown high-rises and a model for what the 21st century urban campus should be. Four hundred acres – the weed-covered remnants of what was once a naval aircraft factory and airfield – are slated for millions of square feet of new commercial buildings, port facilities, plazas, parks and a canal, while a historic marine barracks and other new and repurposed buildings in the base’s historic core will contain 1,000 units of apartments, creating the demand for one and possibly two subway stations. If it all comes together, the Yard could end up employing over 40,000, nearly as many as it did at its height in the middle of World War II.

Perkins+Will's proposal for the redevelopment of the Turner Field/Olympic Stadium area in Atlanta once the Braves skip town.

Hot Damn! Turner Field's Futuristic Vision Released - Curbed Atlanta

For reference, here is how the area looks today: Mostly parking lots on the Turner Field side, a blighted neighborhood across the highway:

The project is in the RFP phase right now, however the Mayor has stated he wants to move quickly on redevelopment once the Braves are gone and complete the project once it's started within five years.

Nice! It's looking like this stadium move is shaping up to be a great thing for Atlanta's urban redevelopment.

Looks awesome! Great for Atlanta.... hopefully they will have a pedestrian bridge of some sort to connect the two urban areas separated by the highway.

Yes! I was super pissed (and still am) over the Braves leaving the city proper, but it is turning out to be the best thing to happen to that neighborhood in 50 years.

The highway already has a viaduct over Georgia Avenue and Fulton Street itself is a viaduct over 75/85, so all that is needed are pedestrian improvements to widen the sidewalks as well as make it more visually appealing and adding streetcar service. Thankfully both are part of the plan.

Yeah, the Brave's decision to leave Atlanta seems like a mistake in the making. But, oh well. That reflects poorly on the Braves organization, not the citizens of Atlanta. Nice to see Atlanta turning lemons into lemon aid and powering ahead. In 20 years, Atlanta will probably have one of the most dynamic urban cores in America and the Braves we be watching from the sidelines.

That's awesome. I'm glad to see they are looking to preserve the stadium and integrate new design features.
