When did we stop really caring?

The sad reality is that Americans NEVER cared.

As long as the gun violence remains a primarily black-on-black issue, it will never get the attention it needs. For most whites in the US, the crime is unfortunate but really doesn't effect them just as urban poverty doesn't. Until murder becomes a "white issue" then it will be regulated as something the government talks about whenever the US suffers one of it's usual Columbine event.

The murder rate and the overwhelming majority of victims exemplifies how the US is still, in some respects, dominated by the race issue.

San Diego has always been a safe city. It's crime rate is comparable to Vancouver.

Why do you think that's the case? High level of gentrification? Weather?

The West, and the West Coast included, has ALWAYS been safer and less violent than the East Coast, or for that matter, anywhere east of the Mississippi.

Why that is, is anyone's gues....

The south side of Boston is very white, very poor, and very dangerous. Atlanta also has some white ghettos & many ghettos in Nashville have white people in them. I wouldn't say urban poverty doesn't effect ANY white people.

Actually we all know why but to say it would be considered politically incorrect and **** a lot of people off. It has to do with population demographics (mainly race but also economics and educational background). However, statistics tell the truth. They show no bias or opinion, therefore cannot be prejudice.

Not as industrial. The biggest economies in the west coast aren't dependent on manufacturing or at least never got big enough to have a severe decline like many cities out east. Los Angeles is really the only west coast city with a large manufacturing sector and subsequently has had notoriously bad crime in previous decades when manufacturing was on the decline.

I don't understand how people don't think the economy, poverty, and crime aren't related.

That's only true when all statistics are used and not cherry picked.

Some people think that the weather is the reason why San Diego is so safe, and on the other end of the spectrum cities such as Detroit are so dangerous.
