Rome=Danville VA
The appeal and identity of Roanoke is the Blue Ridge setting.....Columbus isn't next to the Blue Ridge. Nice city but doesn't have same vibe as Roanoke.

I've driven through Columbus.

i don't think in terms of fortune 500 corporate chamber of commerce stuff.

GA doesn't have a city like Roanoke but I think Rome is the closet one b/c it is the largest city in the north Georgia mountain area.

And people always point out DC is only something because of the federal government. Yes, and Miami is what it is because of the beach. Lots and lots of planning and hard work went into making Northern Virginia what it is. And it’s recognizable across the country. I don’t hear many people outside the DC area who know “MoCo” or Montgomery County. Maybe after Amazon hoopla but still.
The link isn’t working for me.

But also 77, not to be petty, but I looked into the GDP for the counties. Looks like Fulton leads Fairfax by a healthy margin. Do you have similar figures for the rest of NOVA? I’m curious to see how the economies match up between NOVA and Metro Atlanta.

Fulton is comparable to FFX county+Aleaxandria+Arlington (which is basically one area but due to VA's weird city breakouts). Fulton actually houses Atlanta. Fairfax County area which is just a portion of NoVA is just the suburbs.

NoVA is pretty impressive!

Fulton = 152b GDP, 534sqmi
Ffx 406sqmi Arl 26sqmi Alex 15.35sqmi = 149b GDP, 447sqmi

^^^True, fortunately for ATL, it can continue with the infill efforts but NoVa is a beast on its own too.

Isn't GDP per capita what counts?

We already know that NOVA has a higher per capita and is more prosperous with or without DC. Atlanta is much larger than NOVA.

NoVa is 3.1 million, Atlanta MSA is 5.9 million. So basically double the size. NoVa would be if you took metro Atlanta northward of I-20. If you extrapolated NoVa's economy to equate to Atlanta's metro population it would be greater though.
