On and on and on whether it be obesity rates, passport % holders, economic mobility, average SAT scores VA and GA are not even close. VA ranks way above GA..... The only thing GA as a state does better is affordability but then again wages are much higher in VA.
This doesn't mean that someone making a good salary in GA wouldn't have a better quality of life then someone on the lower end of the income scale in VA, it just shows that the average person in VA is more likely to have a better "quality of life".
^ I don't know what is hard to understand the below:
I explained it in my first response to you when you brought this up. There are certain cities where pure geography pretty much dictates the presence of a sizable city, like NYC. I don't really think of that as "luck" but if you do, then we just see this in a fundamentally different light.

He/she is commenting on your reply to isawooty where it seems as though you agree with his statement that VA just lucked out where GA just worked hard to get to where it's at. For isawooty that was just a more palatable reason for GA losing here....

Instead of using the term "luck," I'll just say politics played a much more important role for VA. It would be interesting to see how things would've turned out if, say, Havre de Grace, MD were the nation's capital instead.

Would be cool to see what wouldve happened to Alexandria or Richmond. I assume a large metropolitan area on the MD/VA border wouldve still cropped up as Georgetown and Alexandria wouldve grown and merged into one MSA.

I don't think it would've been all that big but it's possible Richmond would've been a lot bigger.

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on those numbers considering GA is disadvantaged historically because of demographics and certain social issues that I will save for another topic. However, I will say GA has probably made the most stride when it comes to improving the quality of life for it's citizens in the south along with NC.

Did VA not go through the same demographic issues? Are they not both Southern states?

VA doesn't have the same demographics, they have similar demographics. VA is southern but the poorer people never faced the level of poverty and lack of educational opportunities that GA's impoverished faced. GA has made strides but it's never going to compete with VA when it comes to QOL because the demographics will not allow it to. The only advantages GA possesses over VA is population growth and economic growth.
