I'm generally a DC booster, but I think I was as surprised as anyone that CBS Evening News moved production from NYC to DC. I can only think network news is getting desperate as news continues to fragment; seems like a hail-Mary attempt to shake things up--can't get worse mentality?
That's true. Though I would put WGN in the same category with maybe TBS and definitely below CNN (during its ATL days).
As far as "stature" goes, I don't think anything really commands as much respect as having one of the Big Three (ABC, CBS, NBC) bureaus. I'd probably add the BBC as well. Interestingly enough, Boston *does* have a BBC bureau while Chicago doesn't. NYC, LA and DC are the only other U.S. cities with BBC foreign news bureaus.
NBC's major bureaus are in NYC, LA, DC and London with minor bureaus in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Miami, Philly, San Diego and San Francisco. CBS is headquartered in NYC with the rest of its bureaus more or less being equals (with perhaps DC being first among those equals). ABC has done away with physical news desks for the most part (outside of NYC) but it has correspondents based out of Los Angeles and DC.
A city like DC doesn't have much in the way of sitcoms, telenovelas and game shows going for it, but it has something that's arguably more important IMO: daily images of the city in the closing credits of the nightly news.
Great point - In the 80's, Chicago had news bureaus. Max Robinson served as the anchor of ABC News out of Chicago.
Also, I feel like an idiot for not knowing that John Williams composed all of the songs for NBC News. I used to think I was weird for liking the opening theme for Meet The Press. Now it all makes sense.
For some reason like the entire country gets WGN Chicago. That’s why the Cubs are so popular.
I could watch Chicago local news if I wanted to and I live nowhere near Chicago.
LOL, I have always wondered about this. I still can't figure out for the life of me, why WGN is broadcast to the entire nation. Don't get me wrong, I like there news and some of their programming, but I don't understand why it goes national. They must have struck a really good deal way back when

relic from the 1980s when Chicago was #2 and programming much more limited
Boston's CSA (which is not much bigger than Chicago's MSA in area) has over 8 million people and is growing at 5%. Chicago is at 9.8 million and stagnant.
Uhhh. First off why compare a CSA to MSA. 2nd Boston's CSA is just over 8 million people. Chicago has 1.5 million more people in a smaller area. Chicagoland technically would be pushing 11 million. If added Milwaukee msa it would be 13+million.
Chicago also has a CNN bureau while Boston does not.
Chicago also quite regularly has reporters for financial channels like CNBC and Bloomberg who come on the air pretty much every day. Rick Santelli being a prominent guy but there are others
