Show me one number that says Chicago economically is in the middle? If you think Chicago is closer to nyc’s urbanity you have not spent much time in nyc..nyc is wayyy more urban than Chicago..Chicago is closer in urbanity to Boston..regardless of what you see when you look up in the loop
Nyc metro - 20 million people
Chicago metro - 11000 square miles and 9.5 million people
Boston metro 3400 sq miles 4.9 million people
Boston csa 9700 sq miles 8.2 million
Nyc has nearly as many people in its 300 sq miles as Chicago does in its entire metro of 11000 sq miles..
Manhattan population - 1.6 million in 22 square miles
Queens population - 2.2 million
Brooklyn population 2.6 million
Bronx population - 1.5 million
Nyc population density - 27000 people per sq mile
Chicago population density - 11900 people per sq mile
Boston population density 13000 people per sq mile
Wrong. Greater Boston CSA is 15,000sq miles not 9,700
Yeah... hard no.
If you want accurate population metrics use UA, not MSA/CSA where theres miles upon miles of gaps between urban infrastructure and the numbers are calculated by commuting patterns.
as of 2018
NYC - 18,776,233 in 3,450.2 sq miles - 5,448/sq mile
Chicago - 8,636,309 in 2,442.8 sq miles - 3,536/sq mile
Boston - 4,475,825 in 1,873.5 sq miles - 2,389/sq mile
NYC is so much larger than everything outside of LA that the comparison between it and Chicago is superficial at best. Economic standing/impact is one thing but in terms of sheer urbanity, built structure and urban each, Boston & Chicago are not even remotely comparable. Chicago is called the second city for a reason.
Comparing Chicago with Boston in urban standing/population is like comparing Boston with Baltimore.

Whos equating Chicago and Boston ? If this same question were what’s closer to Boston in stature - nyc or Baltimore my answer would be Baltimore...the point is not to equate Chicago and Boston..it’s to note how far away nyc is in stature (specifically urban footprint, economy, culture) from both ..
Take number of restaurants - Chicago has 8000 and nyc has 27000 restaurants....Boston could have 0 restaurants nowhere to eat at all.. and be closer to Chicago than chicago is to nyc
When I think nyc stature I think London not Chicago

If this same question were what’s closer to Boston in stature - nyc or Baltimore my answer would be Baltimore...the point is not to equate Chicago and Boston..it’s to note how far away nyc is in stature (specifically urban footprint, economy, culture) from both ..people really need to work on their reading comprehension

..how do people still not understand what you’re saying here.
You won’t find any numbers to support Chicago being more a peer to NYC than to Boston.
Chicago is far larger and more physically impressive than Boston. Still-it pales to NYC and is dwarfed by NYC.
Economically and impactfully /culturally Chicago is much much more in Boston’s orbit. Nationally and internationally.

The gap between NYC & Chicago is substantially larger than the gap between Chicago & Boston. I get what you are saying, nor am I contesting that.
The only thing I was contesting/disagreeing with is in terms of urban footprint/scope, Chicago is closer to NYC than it is Boston. Apart from that one aspect, yes it's closer to Boston in every way on a national/international level.

Not quite sure how your urban area stats place Chicago closer to nyc when nyc is literally talking 18 million people but agree to disagree on that...otherwise agree with what you’re saying

As I said. There are no objective numbers that would support Chicago being closer to NYC. Even the urban footprint part of it all is still closer to Boston than NYC...

The thing is the way you experience size is much more on a % basis than an absolute basis.
So Chicago feels about 2x the size of Boston and 1/2 the size of New York.
Like for example Cincinnati and Dayton have the same population gap as Boston and Washington but Boston and Washington are basically peers and the cities feel basucally the same size. While Dayton does not feel like it’s in the same league as Cincinnati. It’s because while Boston is about 80% of Washington’s size Dayton is like 35% of Cincinnati’s.

Chicago raw UA holds Boston's entire CSA population in 1/4th the space. It places it substantially further away than Boston, not necessarily closer to NYC. That was the only point I was making.
Its hard to ay because NYC Metro goes so far out (As does Boston) .. you really cant compare the two since their CSA/MSA/UA Boundaries are so messed up. id love to see just a 50 mile ring outside the center city.
