I'm comparing Chicago to Boston. I don't think there's a single soul in the world who would say that Chicago's academic and research sector is equivalent to Boston's.
People who are in-the-know, know that Boston has two top-ten (MIT and Harvard), as does Chicago (U of Chicago and Northwestern). That gives Chicago, as well, as Boston, a lot of clout as far as research and academics. This is according to US News and World Report...the standard for these rankings.
Chicago has the cleanliness, architectural beauty on street level, tree lined streets and pace of Boston.
But the scale, urbanity, skyline and big city feel of New York.
Chicago combines everything I love about Boston with everything I like about New York. Its a like a big beautiful city. But it has a lot of faults... like any city... but the amenities Chicago offers is a huge W. My favorite US city. Also O'Hare is great.

Nowhere has the size or stature that NYC has which is like 5 cities in one.
Chicago though has much broader shoulders than Boston which itself is good sized metro. Chicago's "closeness" to NYC is the urban scale of downtown coming in 2nd in the nation there, but New York still honestly is like two or 3 Chicago's.

Nice assessment, although I don't fully agree... I find this perspective pretty convincing.
By MSA population, there’s a 5mil gap between Boston and Chicago and then a 10mil gap between Chicago and NYC. Literally using that metric, Chicago is only 1/3 the way along the gap from Boston to NYC.
By CSA, there’s a 1.4mil difference between Boston and Chicago and then a 13.4mil gap between Chicago and NYC.

It’s this kind of math that I don’t think tracks if you really delve into it. Let’s say that NYC is two or three Chicagos. How many Bostons, then, are in one Chicago.

Random but I have noticed Boston doesn't actually have tree-lined streets. Even compared to Baltimore...There are small trees on people's mini "yards" but it's not a very lush city...not compared to Chicago from what Ive seen.

Actually, no: Economically, $764B vs $444B (2021) and office/lab/education total sq ft/student pop is where Chicago & Boston are the closest vs every other category mentioned.
Chicago wayy closer to Boston than NYC.
In most metrics I bet Chicago is a lot closer to Boston, however Chicago's 20th century significance and its skyline in particular do a lot of work in people's minds to move it closer or even been a 'peer' to NYC in the eyes of the general public.
