4.8x4=19.2. twice the size of Boston is slightly larger than 1/2 the size of New York.
The difference is larger...1/2 nyc is 9-10 million less...double Boston is 4-5 million more...Chicago is closer to Boston in absolute numbers clearly but it is also closer on city limit and urban area density...

This is before factoring in Boston is surrounded on all side by MSAs/CSAs. Two of which are substantial (1M+) tHE Hartford CSA and MSA birders the Boston CSA. That’s 1.5 million people, excluding the Springfield area. Providence MSA is 1.6 million.
You still find companies referring to themselves as ‘Boston’ all the way in Springfield and Holyoke
All of this is in New England-of which Boston is the unofficial capital.

Which cities feel more different in size. Rochester, NY and Pittsburgh or Boston and Washington?
Both have 1.2/1.3 million difference but While Washington is like 24% bigger than Boston Pittsburgh is 120% larger than Rochester so while two big cities feel about the same size the two smaller ones absolutely don’t.

Since youre pushing “feel” so much let me ask how much you have explored neighborhoods in Brooklyn/queens/Bronx vs wicker park/Logan square/bucktown/ lakeview etc?? Let’s just forget Manhattans 1.6 mill in 22 sq miles for a second..let me tell you Chicago’s “feel” way more like Boston area than nyc...Chicago’s densities are way less and it’s blatantly noticeable

True, Boston is more densely populated than Chicago.

I think though is you measure the distance before you fall off into proper suburbia, Boston is something like 5-6 miles depending on the direction, Chicago is like 11-13 miles, NYC is 16-17 miles, but more like 25 down Long Island.
Chicago's peak might be more like Boston, but Chicago's extent is a bit more like New York.

And nowhere in Chicago’s extent do you feel like you are in nyc outside of the loop...so the one metric regarding urban footprint you can say Chicago may be closer to nyc is number of miles before hitting suburbia but depends on the direction you are going and then even at that it is pretty subjective as to what you define as suburbia because there are areas in Chicago that are pretty suburban...
West Roxbury and Readville are firmly 10 miles from the CBD.. West Roxbury Readville and Fairmount are the only "proper" suburban places in Boston and maybe Adams Village...
Urban Development is unbroken from Boston's CBD to Lynn which is 13 miles.
from Boston's CBD to Watertown which is 9 miles.
It's also urban an unbroken from the CBD to Roslindale Village/Cleary Square which is ~10 miles.
I don't know were you're getting 5 or 6 miles. Explain?
