I dont even know how independent it really is in this day and age. Providence cant even cover its own new via the ProJo anymore. Boston GLobe has much more in depth coverage via it Rhode Island Bureau.
Add to this two of Providence's main minor league teams were/are The Pawtucket PawSox and the Providence Bruins, which copy the Boston bruins logo and colors. So it's really not that independent. Indeed its Airport is served by the MBTA. And it gets much Boston media. COmpared to Baltimore or Milwaukee its not that independent, really. The economy isnt there.
I mean it’s not an economic engine but it’s not dependent on Boston for its existence. I guess I’m referring to the people who have a lot of pride in the area and don’t have any allegiance to Boston although it’s around the corner.
With one of those states being one of the smallest states in the country, lol.
Not sure what that has to do with anything? East coast states are smaller for historical reasons. If the point is to take a jab at a state I wouldn’t be feeling so great about Illinois outside of chicago…
There's a dropoff in metro size after Los Angeles. Boston, Chicago, DC, and the Bay Area are all pretty equivalent to each other in size at 9-10 million.
The only reason I could think why Chicago would be grouped with New York and not Boston is the size of the CBD and the number of tall buildings. I still think Chicago's downtown, while obviously larger than Boston's, is still closer to Boston's than it is to Manhattan.

I get that totally. I just think it’s not *as* independent as Milwaukee is from Chicago.
Also I’m in a younger generation and a lot of the Providence people I know are originally from Boston or their families lives in Boston. It’s a smaller gap for us than prior generations, in all likelihood. I know their are many people you describe but I really don’t know them personally. Most Providence people I know like Providence (and it’s affordability) but have a strong allegiance to Boston and a good familiarity that’s never in doubt. But again that’s just people I know.. and they like in Woonsocket/Pawtucket/Providence . Not like Johnston or Warwick.
Well yea, Fall River is a city of 100k like 15-20 minutes from Providence. New Bedford is another city for 100k about 30 minutes from Providence but an hour from Boston. They get all Providence TV (WPRI, Hot 106) and even print media (Providence Journal). A big chunk of the Providence MSA is in MA, and if it weren’t the Providence MSA it’d be in Bostons.

No genius….you are obviously not sure what I meant . It was a sarcastic response, but I was making an argument FOR Providence, not taking a shot at it!
The poster I was responding to seemed to imply that it was an unfair comparison to point out that Providence MSA has 60,000 more people than Milwaukee MSA because it includes 2 states. I am pointing out that exactly what you said, that NE states are much smaller in terms of land size, so saying that it’s not a fair comparison because Providence MSA includes 2 states doesn’t hold water because the states are much smaller in the NE.
I’m not sure why you decided to take a shot at Illinois and throw it into the conversation when it wasn’t being discussed
