New York is going through a decrease right now, especially because of this brutal weather situation we’re experiencing. But it’s always a good thing when something causes homicides to decline.

The guidelines for officers being allowed to do this have become and are becoming a lot more restrictive.

Hopefully this spike in murders is just a temporary blip and not related to that in any way.
I can’t comment intimately on Montreal since I simply know the city as a tourist and nothing else. Typically though the issues that cause these spikes in crime are a lot more complicated than that. Toronto for example, the gun crime uptick definitely has nothing or at least very little to do with the changes in policing standards and perception. I would argue that the years of carding, targeting and heavy handed policing in racialized communities has contributed more to this uptick in gang violence than any woke defund the police movement that has caught on.

People refuse to talk about the socioeconomic issues because it’s uncomfortable and much harder work than glossing over the real issues. Similar to the toothless and misguided gun bill that the federal government just introduced. Yeah I am sure that the 60 plus percent unemployment rate among Somali men has nothing to do with it but some AR-15 that a dude owns up on Thunder Bay does.

Sorry for the tangent but I think you get my point.

The Somali unemployment rate is 40% in Canada, not 60%. Your point still stands in some regard though.

You are right, thank you for the correction. I was more thinking along the lines of Somali youth in Canada have a 60%+ unemployment rate (https://briarpatchmagazine.com/artic...-feedback-loop)

I also want to take a moment to clarify that I am not targeting Somali’s as I am sympathetic to the rise in violence that plagues the community. Growing up as a Jamaican born person who lived in Lawrence Heights, that was my community facing the exact same issues as Somali youth are now.
