Most of those cities have poverty rates of 20-25% which isnt even adjusted for COL.
Pittsfield has a median Household income of $45,400, Worcester is about $46,000. (Both 2010 numbers) Joplin, MO is $33,000, Springfield MO is $35,400. I don’t believe Pittsfield is 36% more expensive than Joplin. MO.

Basically Massachusetts secondary centers are not really laggards nationally. All midsized cities that aren’t recipients of massive public subsidies generally have a lackluster economy. There are a few exceptions, but are few and far between.

Like Huntsville Ala is well off because NASA, Colorado Springs, the Air Force, Lexington KY? UK, OKC? State Capital, etc etc.

All things that are not replicatable on a large scale.

Not so much the cities part, but Missouri also has a lower COL.

That said, I would definitely choose NYC over MO.

Is this true? A quick search suggests that average highs during the summer are higher in MA than MO?

Yes, it's true. Boston averages about 82 for a high in summer, while KC and St. Louis averages about 89-90 respectively. KC and STL have far more mid to upper 90 days than Boston. Southern areas of MO can be even warmer.

Massachusetts has consistently hot summer weather. It's one of the more humid parts of the country.

At least in Boston there arent many -if any- sunny summer days with highs in the 70s.

Yea of course. I know you're not a fan of MA but I'm surprised anyone chooses MO being a better place to visit, or liking it because it has thunderstorms.

Sounds legit. Might fact check later, but probably won’t.

Could you pull the same data for Worcester and Springfield (MA)? Being by the coast might make Boston more temperate than the rest of the state?

As far as living, if I'm going to deal with a high COL, I expect to get a **** ton in amenities and diversity along with it. And NYC simply offers a lot more than Boston.

As far as visiting, the BBQ and Jazz Clubs you can find in KC is more my speed.
