I'm not sure who said that the South is the better option. I think the OP instigated the thread by asking what was so great about the Sunbelt.
Regarding Ohio, I have family there. I would hardly call Cleveland 'large city urban'. While it does have a nice stock of buildings downtown, it also has a stock of empty buildings downtown. Yes, it is improving with all of the healthcare jobs (and people moving into downtown), but it is not the poster child for large city urban. In addition, the economy in Canton (rust belt urban as you call it) is certainly not booming. When I think of Canton, I certainly do not think of urban.
First off, I am the OP, and almost everyone I know thinks the south is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Also, I unfortunately live in an area of Ohio where Rush Limbaugh is regarded as a god-like figure (again, I spend A LOT of my time in the city for a reason), just to give you an idea. (Side note- Cincinnati's suburbs, along with some of Dayton's are Extremely conservative. Yes, it is rather creepy )
Cleveland is a large town with many hip, walkable urban neighborhoods, many ethnic groups (some of which even have their own sections like Little Italy), and a great history. In fact, IMO is is the most urban city Ohio has to offer because it actually has a subway, the state's highest ranked university by USN&WR (Case Western. We do have better Liberal Arts Colleges, though), and just a cool, gritty, urban feel throughout town that Cincy lacks somewhat.
And for Canton- That's the point of a rust belt city. It's not supposed to look all pretty and frilly. It's real, tough, and down to earth, and if you don't like that, there are pleanty of wimpy posh-land suburbs nearby where you won't get shot at for blaring N'SYNC in your Mercedes convertible. Don't try that in Dayton, though.
First off, I am from Dayton...and it is not the glamorous rust-belt city that Daytonnatian makes it out to be. You spend most of your time in the city? Where? There really is no where in "downtown" Dayton that anyone would go to "hang out" or to shop. I stay away from downtown if at all possible. It is a chore when I do have to go downtown. Everything is leaving Dayton(GM plants closing, NCR moving to ATL, etc...) Dayton is currently 3 or 4 on the most vacated cities right now. I am not one to knock someone for liking this city, but I have lived here for 14 years, came from Michigan. The only "reason" that people I know stay here is mostly for family. There really is nothing here. Although, I do have to agree that most people in Dayton are obsessed w/ the "south", but by that I mean Florida. It seems that "Florida" is the promised land to them, or to put OBX stickers on their cars, as if us "normal" people are unable to drive down there, get a sticker, and advertise that we vacation there as well, HAHA. I , for one, plan on moving west, which many people in Dayton have never ventured to. They are so eastern US focused...work here, live here, vacation in Florida. They probably have no idea of the lack of humidity out west.
Oh, and for people who say the rust-belt cities have "cooler" summers, please. Summer here gets unbearably hot and humid to where you cannot go outside and do anything, so I hate when people say I love the winter and the cooler summers. The weather in the midwest is awful....even family who has lived in michigan their whole lives, we all complain about the weather, although most don't worry about it as they would just rather live by family and accept these states for what they are.

You from Dayton? Or are you from one of our suburbs and think that you are an expert on the city like many of our DDN commenters who frequently inject cunning phrases like "socialism" and "crime" into every other word of what they are saying? The least you can do is be positive about the city's future unless you really hold a grudge against it for some reason.....
Sheesch, sometimes I feel like I am the only person out here who would care if Ohio fell off the face of the earth...
It must be the lack of Confederate flags. Tampa's title of having the largest Confederate flag in the world is hard to beat.
What does that have to do with anything? I can turn around and say that as a gay man, I was surprised at how many gays are racist in the North...that may not be a surprise to you.
As if you are not capable of lame personal attacks.
Here is the nice rep note that you wrote to me...
The difference is one is on a public forum and the other is in a direct message that nobody else sees (unless of course the recipient posts it for all to see.) Yours was a lame personal attack in public, and the other was a lame personal attack in private.

Perhaps you should re-read the post I responded to. I was responding originally to a sweeping generalization he made towards the South and its people. I will not hide in anonymity while speaking my mind. It was a very moronic comment for him to make. Having said that, mind your own business.
