Not everyone can afford to live the life they would dream of in NYC. I wouldn't be happy living there, going out and spending lots of money, and then going home to a studio apartment or an Archie Bunker type house (as many people do). I would prefer another urban area where I could spend money AND have a great place to live. Of course, that's just my opinion.
800 for a studio vs a townhome for the same amount in some other areas of the USA . Does not sound like your getting you moneys worth to me 700,000 dollars for a house vs the same type of house elsewhere for 200,000 Sound like your paying more than you should....

800 may get you a rental parking spot not a studio in NYC - thats why I like Philly; I can get the same parking spot for 400 - half the cost and most of the same amenities
I can afford to take in all the city has to offer, the people are much more down to earth and friendlier, the beach is a weekly activity that takes 5 min to get to, it's much cheaper to party, the House music scene, its cleaner, and I prefer the pace.
Bigger, more expensive, and more exclusive does not always equal better. But hey, that seems to be the current American mentality right now

Wow. As far as people in Chicago being much "more down to earth and friendlier" than in New York as you claim.... Well, you do understand it is neither very "down to earth" nor "friendly" not to mention in good taste or intelligent to make a comment like yours, don't you? I bet you don't. That's why most people prefer New York over Chicago.
Now, as far as partying is concerned you can get drunk anywhere in the world, New York however offers some world-class entertainment, arts and sports Chicago can only dream about.
