I love both cities, and they're much, much closer than you ascribe. Chicago's downtown is more vibrant and has taller buildings, but DC's close-in neighborhoods rival anything in Chicago in terms of activity, restaurants, nightlife, etc. Chicago beats DC in shopping; DC beats Chicago in cultural opportunities.
I think the two are actually really evenly matched, which is part of the reason I like both of them so much.
Well, good for you. But this is purely a subjective determination, and just because you disagree with my perspective, is in no way an indication that my perspective is incorrect or wrong. You don't know a thing about me, my tastes, my background, my experiences, my preferences, so have no grounds to state "this isn't in any way accurate." Respect and learn from the differing perspectives of others. I can understand how someone may feel the way you do, but I feel differently.
I grew up in Chicago, and spent a great deal of time as a professional in DC. I stand by my statement. Doesn't phase me in the least that you disagree.
Chicago is a great place with a lot of great amenities. DC is a little more fast-paced and culturally sophisticated.
But Chicago has better theater, a better ballet, better opera, a better symphony, better restaurants and better modern art. From that perspective, wouldn't you say Chicago is more culturally sophisticated than DC?

Chicago has no answer for the Smithsonian or DC's 1000 other cultural events and attractions. What's Chicago's equivalent to the Kennedy Center Honors? A day at the White House or Capitol? Memorials? Or spending a day at a Supreme Court hearing on a major ruling? Or looking up your ancestors at the National Archives? Or attending an embassy party with the Prime Minister of Ubekestan? Or participating in a march with a million people on the Mall or 100,000 in protest over abortion rights? Nah mean? LOL

Chicagoans could trot out a hundred other things as well. Yes, DC has decent culture and many attractions, but frankly, for all-encompassing culture... music in all forms (classical, opera, live blues, jazz and rock), theater, dining, architecture, clubbing, improv, city fests, and on and on and on (museums and sports are probably a wash.), Chicago is world-class.
For politics-related stuff... yea, DC wins. For overall culture, Chicago wins this and it's not really that close.
