WHAT??? lost me on that one. I can't think of any other city that would be as hurt as much as Orlando if they lost their main attraction. (disney)
Ok and Tampa's main attraction is "The BAY" . Take that body of water from Tampa and all you have is dense, hot, bland land. At least we would have Lockheed Martin

Orlando has just as much history as Tampa. And how is Tampa more culturally relevant? Orlando has just as much historic areas, hosts MANY more national conventions than Tampa (2nd largest convention center in the US). Orlando is hosting the 1212 NBA all star game event weekend. Orlando is home to the most famous theme parks in the US, and maybe even world. Which plays a huge part in Americas culture.. Disney, Universal... 3 vs 4 500 companies isn't a huge difference, especially when you look at population size (Tampa has more ppl), and Orlando also plays a HUGE role in the military. Orlando is the hub of the nation’s military simulation and training programs. Its home to the simulation procurement commands for the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard... Orlando is far more known on a national and even international level. So no, I don't get how someone said Tampa is more culturally relevant.
I agree with almost everything except Orlando having just as much history as Tampa. Does Orlando have a national historic landmark district like Ybor city? Face it, when Henry Plant first brought the railroad to Tampa, and built the Tampa Bay hotel (now University of Tampa), back when Tampa was the cigar capital of the world and immigrants were poring into West Tampa and Ybor city, and the port of Tampa was first bustling, Orlando was a backwater town that no one had heard of until the 60s when Disney came in.
Point was Orlando skyline is flexible. Has room to expand up and out. You could put the skyline in an city in Florida and it would fit. I do not feel the same about Tampa. I feel like Tampa will expand in height but not outward. Just from being around downtown Tampa. Orlando and Tampa truly has to get rid of surface lots which they both have been doing at a slow pace.
Agreed. I feel as though if some of the Hotels where downtown, Our skyline would be killer. Not height wise but density and architecturally.
I don't see how Tampa's isn't flexible. And it has already starting to expand outward with the Channelside area going from warehouses to large condos, and now the Tampa city counsel just approved the Encore project, with will turn a former section 8 neighborhood, now a vacant 40+ acre lot into a mixed use, development with residential, office, retail, and park space. It will connect Ybor city with Downtown. Its also filling in. The city also just approved for USF to build a medical research facility on what is now just a parking lot in DT.
lets face it. if orlando never had disney, we might not even be referring to it as a major city
Oh sorry but that insult doesn't work on people who actually like having Disney less than 30 minutes away. In fact I'm proud to have Disney and yes thank you, we are a major city. You know you could say the same thing about any city. Take away their major "thing" and they wouldn't be a major city. Like LA without the movies, DC without the US government, and Chicago without the meatpacking industry. Every major city got it's start from somewhere, ours was Disney. If Orlando were still "only Disney" this thread would be called Tampa vs WDW

Sorry to double post but Tampa has done very well with Channelside and and the TECO street cars are pretty sweet. Do they run late enough to be your DD back if you went out in Ybor and say lived in a Channelside condo ??

I think people hate on Disney because it FITS in orlando.
Or Both. Some Hate Disney Cause It Is Orlando. Some Hate Orlando Because Disney Is In it. I Feel let A City Have the Economy it wants. Goes to show you when cities are successful and full of potential, nobody wants to see them shine. Too bad Orlando will always shine because it is in the "Sunshine State"
