Got it. Makes sense. Either way, CT travel sucks.

This is not CT, per se, but the NE in general.

I had unavoidable biz in CT on Fri. I left early enough to miss traffic all around, stopped off at one of my old friends', and left late enough - 10 PM - that getting the heck out should have been a smooth sail.

There was a ONE HOUR backup on the approach to the GWB starting between Exits 3 and 4, a distance of no more than four miles to the bridge. You should have seen my sputtering about asphalt jungles, zero population growth, where in Sam Hill are the questionable benefits of the recession reflected in lower traffic, etc. etc.

This was the only time I have made that commute that I ever felt like getting out and kissing the pavement once I got to the NJ Turnpike. The rest of the trip - ususally a soulsucking slog - was almost a pleasure in contrast to being trapped amongst tractor trailers belching, nasty drivers jostling for position and doing the classic MFFY maneuvers, and trying to calculate whether or not the boom boxes were setting up harmonics with the overpasses that would send us all crashing to our deaths.

I would bet good money that the Beltway is as bad or worse, and on a more regular basis. Having lived with both, there's a certain sinister quality to I-95 traffic between the GWB and past New Haven. I've not felt like I was being cased while in a dead slow crawl on the Beltway.

I'm lucky is that I don't have to be in Greenwich until like 10:30 or 11:00 AM, so I miss most of the traffic.
Coming home I take the Merritt to exit 35 (36 if I'm lucky) and take the back roads through New Canaan and Wilton back to Trumbull. I think at 5 PM I get home faster that way then if I sit on the Merritt.

What back roads do you take from Wilton to Trumbull? I've tried doing this a couple of times and it takes me forever, so I would love to know the right route.

I second that. What backroads? That would help me avoid the Stamford through Westport congestion.

No panacea exists but here is the route:

Route 7 to 57 (Georgetown Road) briefly to 107 (Redding Road). Take 107 until Blackrock turnpike and from there make your way over to North Park Ave/Stepney. It's very slow and windy at points and probably only saves time on the worst of commutes. Sorry

If you have a GPS, there's an option on it that allows you to avoid highways. So if you click on that, it will automatically guide you to your destination using the backroads.. Mapquest.com also has that too. Just be ready to stop at lights and sometimes take double the amount of time.

I learned sitting in heavy traffic is better than taking post road because everyone is getting off or not getting on and creating congestion on post road.
