What a nightmare and a complete waste of money. The convergence of so many lanes of traffic really creates a difficult giant intersection. All to placate a developer who now is long gone and who built nothing. They wanted to be able to walk down Orange Street to get to Union Station. Like pedestrians are going to feel comfortable crossing that many lanes of traffic. Jay

An epic disaster. Might as well station cops nearby with accident reports at the site. Whoever thought of this plan should be fired for cause.

I can tell you this nightmare is STRICTLY the city’s planning department doing. It has a LONG history including significant hesitation from the state and the city’s consultants who advised against it. Unfortunately politics intervened and their objections and concerns were overridden in favor of a developer’s wishes. That developer is gone without producing one single thing so it’s pretty ironic that this has been built. This is virtually a complete waste of taxpayers money IMHO. Jay

I've already booked a trip for late January and will be flying Avelo.
Avelo is adding Sarasota, FL to it's non-stop destinations from Tweed starting January 13th @ $49 each way.

Two massive new developments have moved one step closer to reality. New Haven’s Planning Commission approved a zoning change that will allow Fusco Corporation to build apartments on Long Wharf. The commission also approved a seven story apartment complex on Fair Street in Wooster Square. Sounds good. Jay

More housing news: The City Plan Commission unanimously approved plans to build a new seven-story, 185-unit apartment complex on Fair Street—paving the way for a reopened public connection between Union Street and Olive Street, and piling on to the residential-development blitz currently taking place on the downtown edge of Wooster Square.

It is a bit more expensive as Avelo adds a seat charge, but still a bargain, as is most airfare, for now.

IMO lack of most business travel is still crushing airlines ability to raise fares, despite fuel being sky high. Avelo is seeking the tourist market based on cities it serves.

I hope Avelo has deep pockets and avoids doing what Jet Blue had to do-just as it began rising. Jet Blue cut 2 dozen plus cities when cash ran low last decade.

I suspect Avelo is losing money right now, want it at Tweed a long time. Hence I hope it is well funded.

The last I heard the owner of the property, Northland, wants to build a massive mixed use development there. That was about 10 years ago. Nothing has been proposed since.

The property has been involved in a large lawsuit brought by the tenants of the former complex there, called Church Street South. The tenants claimed the property had been allowed to deteriorate to the point where it was unhealthy. In February a judge issued an $18 million judgement for the tenants. Have seen much else since. More housing coming on line from a pro-housing mayor: https://www.newhavenindependent.org/...entry/the_elm/

"Elicker thanked Falker for investing in New Haven, lamented that the property included no dedicated affordable rentals — and then offered his hopes that the build build build approach to urban planning will ultimately benefit everyone in the city, not just those who can afford The Elm’s rents."

“I’m excited to have new units online,” the mayor said. “I always like to see affordable units, but the fact that we have market-rate units here at this site, I think it puts more pressure on the market to provide more options to people and get those costs down.”

Oh and for folks thinking this is a horrible type of gentrification, here's a quote from a neighbor: "Sitting on the front porch of her Howe Street apartment right across the street from The Elm, Angela Bennett called the new apartment building across the way a welcome addition to the block."

“It’s an upscale apartment building, so it’s quiet,” she said. “I don’t mind it.”
