As far as wooded areas, that’s a wash too, maybe slight edge to Fairfield. Fairfield has more acreage, Lake Mohegan Park, and the reservoir, Milford has Mondo Ponds, Beaver Brook, Eisenhower Park, and large coastal preserves in Silver Sands and Coastal Audubon Center.

Milford only really has one large tract housing area, which is near Silver Sands where dozens of capes were built in post war. Outside of that is a wide range of homes, many more modest than Fairfield in general, although Fairfield has plenty of ho hum housing too.

They are 2 of my favorite towns, but I personally prefer Milford for its coastal beauty alone and down to earth vibe (there’s also a charm to the downtown area and surrounding historic homes), but I totally get why someone would choose Fairfield too. I would expect Milford to be the underdog in that fight, but who knows.
I’m not sure I agree with you that Milford’s Center is more attractive than Fairfield. Milford Green is pretty with the duck ponds but Fairfield’s Town Green is classic with its historic Old Town Hall That dates back to 1794 when it served as the county courthouse. Milford’s Central business district is smaller than Fairfield’s and Fairfield’s is more attractive with the iconic Community Theater. It also has the great Fairfield University Book Store in the Center.

I strongly disagree with you saying that Fairfield has plenty of “ho hum housing”. Sure it has some, every town does, but Milford has a lot of tract style housing with identical house after house. In fact most of its post war housing is mass produced tract housing. Fairfield has more variety of housing types in most neighborhoods. Southport and Greenfield Hill aren’t Fairfield’s only upscale neighborhoods. There is also Sasco Hill, Brooklawn Park, Toilsome Hill, Winton Park, Mill Hill, Skytop or Tanaka Park. Milford has nothing quite like any of these.

Fairfield in general places a very high value on education. Both Fairfield’s high schools are always ranked among the top high schools in the state. I’d also add Fairfield has two universities, Fairfield U and Sacred Heart. Milford does not even have one. I’d say this moves Fairfield a notch or two above Milford. Jay

New Haven vs Fairfield. I'm taking the Elm City here. More to offer combined with the architecture, Yale, East Rocks.

Milford vs Old Saybrook. Not a very difficult choice.
