I still think if it was a mercy killing they would have a goodbye to their family in some way, a note, recorded on a phone, something.

I was shocked at how many people go missing from within national parks around the country, and how eerie some of the circumstances have been.

I would say run of the mill accidents and people getting lost account for some of them, but others, there is something else going on.

This phenomena has been discussed on the Coast to Coast AM radio show. Indeed there are some truly eerie circumstances involved.

IIRC, the government doesn't really keep good records of this and people/orgs that seek what they have feel like they're pulling teeth.

You know that is an excellent point.

You figure one or other would have done something, anything to record their last moments either through photo or video on cell phone. Or a last goodbye from him as he apologizes for what he is about to do.

None of that at all.

That's assuming their phone batteries weren't dead.

If they died the same day, the phone batteries would still be working. Otherwise--not. All we know is, someone tried to make a cell phone call at 4 p.m. the first day. Therefore, that day, their phones were charged. There are conflicting reports as to whether it was her phone or his. There's no info about police examining their phones, which seems odd to me. His dad said his son was maintaining daily cell phone contact, he said he and his son were close, but that on the day of the hike, his son didn't contact him at all. The two didn't begin the hike until 11:00 a.m, IIRC, so there was plenty of time for his son to call or text him, "We're heading out, now! We should be back by mid-afternoon or so. Talk to you later!" or some such.

Remember, the route they took is a popular jogging trail of moderate difficulty, so the hike would have taken maybe 2-3 hrs. max, at a walking pace. It wasn't an all-day or all-afternoon hike route.

Both phones had dead batteries? nah not buying it.

IF they were both dead why not a note? why not bye or I love you or something scratched into a rock if they had no pen and paper?

I would have left something for my family. I think most people would have before subjecting themselves to a mercy killing.

Just because one of them tried to use his phone, doesn't mean the battery wasn't almost dead. The phone call could have been a last chance effort to call for help. When I go hiking, if I don't turn off my phone or switch to airplane mode, the battery is dead by mid day. When it's searching for service, the battery is drained pretty quickly.

The dad's phone wasn't working, so he doesn't know if his son tried to contact him or not.

All the articles I've read said they started their hike at 6:45 am.

Scratched into a rock?? Most people don't bring a chisel and hammer on a hike.

lol I guess another rock wouldn't work in a last chance to say goodbye. Most people would have thought to have used something. we are talking emergency/last chance/dying breath scenario here.

chisel hahaha thanks for that

I imagine if I was one of those hikers I would have used ANYTHING to leave a message.

I thought about the message thing too then ultimately thought that if I was near death from dehydration and who knows what else and ready to kill my girlfriend and then myself, I might not be thinking so clearly. Not clearly enough to remember to write a note or even capable of writing a note.
