So why do they cross the border dozens, and then they are released to the Ukraine?

It was tactical maneuver - soldiers break out of encirclement and have incorporated to the basic forces of Army of Ukraine.

If they are at war with Russia, then why did hundreds of Ukrainian troops flee to Russia for protection from the separatists?

I will tell you why, because Russia and Ukraine are not at war with each other, and their relations are so good that in fact Ukrainian soldiers feel safe fleeing to Russia when the need arises for protection from the separatists, who Russia will not allow to cross into Russia in pursuit of Ukrainian troops.

Russia then allowed all but a few officers back to Ukraine, escorted into safe areas for safety against the separatists. The officers were retained for war crimes, which I think is not the right thing to do.

It's true. But the soldiers can not do such maneuvers through the territory of the country to which they are at war.

Tactical maneuver, to retreat to a country you are at war with for safety? You make absolutely no sense, you are grasping for straws trying to prove your myth of Russia and Ukraine being at war with each other. If they were at war, Russia would be in Kiev in a month.

By the way, one of the officers, who returned to Kiev after the maneuver, accused of desertion and was given to the Tribunal.

In a month? Are you serious? This war would be ended in the same day as it was started. Kievan junta leaders would have done the same thing that Hitler did when he found out that russians headed to the reichstag.

Sure. Moreover, this regime is a puppet of the USA. It is clear that yankees play an Ukraine card for the achievement of their own purposes.
