Thanks for advices . You think that it is possible to get by using only english and some basic russian phrases ? Do many young russians speak good english ? I don't even ask if older people speak english especially in Syberia because it seems fairly obvious that they do not , but do young russians in cities speak good english ?
I think you may find it difficult and you should prepare by learning some everyday Russian and how to read schedules and the like. The first time was out on my own there it was a little bewildering. Lots of Russians speak english and they're very helpful. Last time in Moscow there was a lot in englsh too. Outside of Moscow they will lack in that because of lack of tourism.
If you want to meet interesting people, get a bed in 2nd class and you will receive roommates.
No, no, for meeting with interesting people , the third class is perfect , you can simultaneously meet students, demobilized soldiers, gypsy with their kids who running along train

Don't know about "gypsy with their kids running along train" (that's news to me))) ) but yes, I'd think that "third class" would be much more interesting in this respect.
P.S. Back in the day I don't remember any "second class."
Just your regular "cupe" ( what now looks like a "third class") and the "first class."

Yeap for me this was news too, when I suddenly had to go on a business trip to Kazakhstan from Russia, and there were no tickets for the plane, and there were only in the third class tickets. And on the train there was a gypsy camp, they went for the bride of their baron's son. It was the first time I'd seen them so close, and I hope that the last one
Finnish cheese and butter tried to be smuggled into Russia. Pics are from the Russian customs. Xaxaxa.
