That's western journalism for you. Add, omit, twist and in general distort the piece to fit the boiler plate propaganda required.

greg is correct. All these foods are found in eastern European countries from Poland, Serbia to Russia and in between. The names change though so that's why the confusion exists. Take Polish Pierogi for example... they are vareniki not pirozhki. And they are also dumplings to us.

"Dumplings" ( as far as I know) are identified with a totally different word in Russian, ( not the ones you've used above.)
However all these dishes from E.E you mentioned above, are marketed under their own original names in the US ( Polish version of it - at least where I live.)
