Apparently driving on the tolled road will end up being cheaper than the old road considering the amount of gas and time wasted.

I guess Russia has taken its new capitalist future a little too close to heart, even in the US we are not that capitalist

Oh, Russians have tendency to take EVERYTHING "too close to heart," be that "socialism" or "capitalism."
And that 's why I personally am not less weary of Russian capitalism than of Russian socialism.

Grega, you're familiar with the roads around here in Seattle and specifically I-405? It has tolls on the HOV lanes as high as $10 at peak times. The new tunnel is tolled, Narrows Bridge is tolled even though it was paid for years ago. They're mulling new ways to get revenue like paying a fee for miles traveled per year. The new $30 car tabs initiative has been stopped by the courts even though the people have spoken. We have one of the highest gas taxes in the nation. There are many highways in America tolled, especially in the east.

The powers that be are certainly capitalist in this neck of the woods.

Yes I have been seeing a push to toll our roads, but for the moment, even on I-405 there are un-tolled lanes. Also as a side note I support the taxes on our car tabs, Seattle is pathetically behind in rail transport and Seattle has wasted good opportunities in the past, but that’s a whole other topic that we can discuss on the Seattle forum. My point being is if all out interstate highways were tolled, not just the urban ones, the country would be up in arms angry.

Also I’m actually kinda surprised that a freeway didn’t already exist between Moscow and St.Petsburg, seems kinda like a no brainer.

There was a highway but it went through every little burg in between the two cities and wasn't in that great of shape. The Neva is a high speed bypass.

There is a difference between a highway and a freeway, highways can have stoplights/stop signs/traffic circles etc. Freeways have dedicated lanes with on and off ramps, from the looks of things that didn’t exist in Russia except for some urban areas.

Agreed. I-5 is a freeway, 410 through Enumclaw to Yakima is a highway. 7 south is a highway. I-405 is a freeway. Two different levels of complexity.

M-11 between St Pete and Moscow was a highway, this new road is a freeway. Talking to some other people they apparently intend to take it due east from Moscow all the way to Yeketerinburg. I know the Hamburg Hongkong road will go through Minsk and Moscow but there's going to be a southern system with Volgograd region getting a major overhaul of it's highway system. A friend said he saw something on Vesti about it but I can't find anything and he didn't keep a link.

There's apparently another system in the works going south towards Chechnya and the Stans.

Freeways are a need, or a luxury. Here in America in the major metro areas they're needed but overall the wisdom in building them as opposed to alternatives is questionable.

You said you are for the light rail in Puget Sound. It's going to break us but then we have painted ourselves into a corner.

They've had yet another ice skating show today.
You can tell it's winter in Russia.

I watched her video too. Very nice girl. It was especially nice to see Novosibirsk, because I live nearby. And what are your impressions about it?

i was there in 1995, January for 4 days. It was cold as hell and I walked to the market from my hotel (I think it was -35) and when i got back I was almost frozen even with all the layers. That's the most prominent memory i have of it. I didn't get out into the city much except to and from the job offices, and there we didn't go outside much. It was pretty drab in comparison from what I saw.

I made a good friend there too. Sergey. He and his wife were dirt poor. He moved to Belgorod a few years later and built a chicken ranch, sold it and now lives somewhere around Yaroslavl.
