Trump signed the latest US defense spending bill yesterday. Attached to it was sanctions to be enforced on the Nordstream 2 and Turkstream pipelines and all those associated with it. Allseas, the Swiss company laying the Nordstream 2 pipeline has apparently stopped operations.
This is just another step on the road to irrelevance for the US. Systems are being set up that will keep the US out of the picture in the world of commerce around the globe.
Ah, the US interfering in the internal affairs of another country...
Yet cry and throw a hissy fit when other countries interfere in the internal affairs of the US.

The question is - why so late?
Why did they come up with these sanctions by the end of the project? ( Yes of course they included it in the military budget, so that Trump wouldn't be able NOT to sign it. And, as I've already mentioned it before, it was Ted Cruz who initiated it.)
Were they trying to make Europeans spend as much as possible ( after all this project is worth $11 billion - ) before they'd be forced to *dump it*?
But if we look at it from this angle, then already a few publications (Bloomberg and Forbes I believe among them) are acknowledging that "unfortunately it's too late, and the project can't be stopped - it will be accomplished one way or the other.")
Then it was just a game?
Or only an attempt to DELAY the completion ( then latest move of Denmark to procrastinate with permission came handy?) If yes, for what reasons exactly?
Or was it just a "wink to Ukraine" - sorta "look guys, we are really trying..."
Just pondering.
P.S. And of course Washington forced Germans to pay for the modernization of Ukrainian transit system, to keep it for relatively small amounts of transit.
Gasprom signed the contract with Ukraine for five years already yesterday or day before, in exchange of dropping all court charges.
Well may be that's it - Washington simply tried to DELAY the project, to keep Ukrainians alive.
It's grandstanding by Ted Cruz and his people, he gets to look good to his voters. His neck of the woods is heavy on the LNG thing. When it comes election time he can say "I tried to stop the Russians and make the EU buy our "freedom molecules". If he didn't do this his next opponent would surely use it against him. It will also get him the Ukrainian vote and their sypathizers. There's also the investors in Americas LNG companies he has to cater too.
I don't think keeping Ukraine alive was an issue. Russia is going to deal with them, they won't be cut off unless they do something stupid, some provocation. The involved parties trying to send a message "we tried" will not go over as credible even for Ukraine but they'll put on a happy face anyway.
America gets nothing, as a matter of fact, it looses. This is punching oneself in the face, it's a product of our insane political system. It sends a bad message to those who would want to do business with us. Isn't a contract a contract? Not if you're dealing with America. Or elses don't work that well when it comes to human behavior either.
It's going to be interesting to see how this plays out, that's for sure.
