Same reasons the USA increased border controls to Canada and Mexico: security and tracking. There is nothing stopping you from believing its a nefarious initiative though. They have to use a passport to go to any country now. I believe they are one of the few countries where people can visit both Europe and Russia without visas. It used to be the same with Baltics but maybe not anymore.

Christmas is a holiday on both dates due to people of varying churches following one calendar or the other. It doesn't have to be an anti Russian conspiracy. Most still use Jan 7 since most are eastern orthodox.

+ If you don't receive news about Russia from Telegram, then you are an old person and it's your problems. Most likely you like to get newspapers once a week.

I did not say it was anti-Russian conspiracy, I said it was yet another excuse to get money from people.

They can track just fine without the international passport, nothing new with that, the domestic passport is just fine for that.

The Avangard system is being deployed. If it's performance specs are true it's a game changer.

As Boxus mentioned - they DID have to use their passports before to cross the border anyway ( the internal ones.) Now they will be simply forced to pay more for their "foreign passports" to "go abroad."

No it doesn't have to be.
But being an Eastern Orthodox, these feeble attempts to appear "Westernized" are too obvious and too funny to say the least.

Oh..
This sounds like some kind of a Christmas gift...

Is this why dear Jens Stoltenberg is saying now that "alliance should seek better relations with Russia," and (*gasp*) is willing to meet with Putin?

Or do I get it wrong?

Yeah, but at this point, you might as well just use December 25th. It's the same thing either ways. January 7th only makes sense if you still use the Julian calendar. Greeks have already moved on.

Well, I guess ultimately is is going to be lower cost in the long run, then trying to launch thousands of missiles with thousands of warheads that would overwhelm any missile defense system.

At that, given the missile it has been put on as of now, this is not for the US nor Russia's largest trade partner, the EU, but to rattle China's nerves in a passive manner (as were the strikes from Russian territory into Syria). They state it will go on the Sarmat in the future, but seems that kind of range was not a priority at this time.

MWR....
Christmas in Russia/Ukraine is a small religious gathering comparably to what Christmas is in the West.
As far as tradition goes, EASTER is far more important in Eastern Orthodox.
So all these attempts to change the century-old traditions NOW ( and the reasons behind them) are all too obvious.
