Generally speaking, it's quick, fairly cheap and reliable. It may be crap, but you know what you're going to get. I rarely eat fast food anymore. The exception might be on a road trip, and only if I didn't plan ahead and don't want to stop for a sit-down meal somewhere else.
Rice and Beans and some greens are not expensive whatsoever and would be worlds better for you than fast food and much cheaper. As I said earlier, you are basically slowly killing yourself and at the same time increasing health insurance costs with your obesity levels. People eat it b/c they are lazy and they like the taste, it's not about cost. There are plenty of healthy cheap meals much cheaper than fast food. You can get a 20 pound bag of rice for 10 dollars and a 10 pound bag of beans for 5 bucks. Frozen bulk packages of things like broccoli and peas are super cheap. Flour is cheap, lentils are cheap, all dried beans are dirt cheap, dozen eggs are cheap, bag of frozen chicken breasts are cheap, and on and on. Bananas and other fruits are cheap, I get them for .19 cents a piece at Trader Joe's, in Manhattan! Pasta and Cereals go on sale *all* the time somewhere. I'm sure you guys can find some much cheaper options at walmarts, sam's clubs, ethnic stores. I don't even have a stove, just a single burner, a microwave and a toaster oven and manage to make meals every day! You would do it if you cared about your health but you just get a craving for a bucket of kfc with a side of gravy and can't resist.
The McDonalds in Europe tastes the exact same as in the U.S. It's crap wherever you eat it.
Europe, BTW, usually has less strict food standards than in the U.S. The EU version of the Food and Drug Administration is much more concerned about protecting certain interest groups (like beef providers in some nations) than actually making decisions based on hard science. It's basically a much more political role than in the U.S.
And let's not forget MAD COW DISEASE. Hell, I am permanently banned now from giving blood in the US because I lived in Europe for several years in the 1990s!

It is so expensive to cook in house these days. Especially with meat. For people like us (lower class), it's a necessary evil.
if you are smart, it is cheaper to cook at home. I can whip up a decent meal for under $4 a plate. If I really tried I'm sure I can do it for under $2.

I don't even think fast food is all that cheap anymore. Sure, a plain hamburger and small fry are cheap, but how many people actually fill up on that? It seems like once you get done paying for sides and drinks or "value" meals it's close to $7 or $8. For that price or a little more, you could eat somewhere slightly better (even if it is one of those dreaded chains).
Food isn't all that cheap here, unfortunately, especially fresh produce. We also don't have Trader Joes. I have to shop at 3 or 4 different stores just to get everything and not pay a small fortune. Still, if you take advantage of sales and reward discounts and co-ops (if available), it is cheaper to eat healthier at home.
