I would say the maine Acadians is probably one of the least. There is a small(100k) francophone population, mostly in northern Maine. They have their own dialect of French called New England French. Besides the language barrier the location is extremely remote from American cities and culture.
This region used to be part of New Brunswick, and was ceded to the US during a conflict in the mid 19th century. The culture is still more aligned with that provence and country than with the states and probably isn't goin to change anytime soon.
4 years ago, I actually cringe rereading that post. But I meant unique not weird, as in Central Asians can look Russian, Korean, Arabic and Indian all at the same time, or range along a spectrum.
When an immigrant group maintains their own culture that is not the same as not assimilating.
There are plenty of immigrant groups in this country who hang onto their own culture and still figure out how to send their kids to school to get a higher education and better job opportunities. They figure out how to fit into the economic and legal system so that they can open (or purchase) their own businesses. If the original first generation immigrants don't learn English, their children do.
Also, immigrant culture is absorbed in the culture of the USA. We take their food and their holidays and sometimes their clothing styles and add those to the cultural mishmash. We pick up some of their vocabulary and use it. We often take their music and incorporate that into our lives.
Are Amish and Hasidic Jews typically able to speak English?
Vast majority of Hasidic Jews are able to speak English, they just almost never have to, since most people don't even talk to them, outside of government officials or ConEd repairmen. Unlike the Amish, Hasidic Jews do live in cities, drive cars, can use most modern technology, etc. They just have a 'weird' lifestyle due to their religious practices.
If you want to see how they live, this guy has a great channel:
Imo, if they arent committing crimes and are paying taxes, theyve assimilated as far as Im concerned.
This my view as well.
