The Tidewater VA/Philly connection has existed for awhile now. I remember hearing the Clipse and Pharrell talk about how Philly was the first city to push the song Grindin' back in the days and play it on the radio frequently. I think it has to do with the fact that both areas are some of the most underrated for hip-hop in the country also. The problem with Virginia is we never established our own marquee sound, although we had many legends come from the area. Pharrell and the Neptunes/Clipse and Timbaland/Missy had the opportunity to do that in the 90's/2000's. Also, I think tidewater VA's location between the northeast (NYC) and dirty south (Atlanta) made it more difficult to create a unique identity in the rap game. The deeper south (ATL, New Orleans, Miami, Texas, Memphis) never accepted VA back in the day as being southern enough and the music wasn't usually eastcoast/boom bap enough to people from NYC/Boston/etc. Therefore, many tidewater VA artists either created their own blended sound or would pick between the popular NYC, dirty south, or Chicago/drill sounds.

Here is a video explaining VA's place in hip hop with Mad Skillz from Richmond. Philly is also mentioned as being underrated for hip hop. The phrase, "there is something in the water" comes from the fact that VA (Tidewater/Hampton Roads) has a lot of the top talent in the game.

Appreciate this post. I have never heard most of these guys. I am not suprised that the drill sound is popular with the youth on the peninsula (especially downtown/east end Newport News). You never know what kind of hip-hop you will hear from 757 artist.

Much respect to the DMV area. I always consider you all our cousins in the Tidewater VA area. I have heard of some of the arist before. Wale has always been my favorite from the area, but I used to listen to Fat Trel and Shy Glizzy also. Black Cobain was from Alexandria and was popular at one point too, although he sounds like Wale to me. I wish more of the DMV artist would incorporate elements of gogo in the music in some way. I know the gogo scene isn't the same as it used to be back when Backyard Band was running the show, but I have heard some newer bands that are pretty good (New Impressionz/etc).

Shout out to the Tidewater. A lot of legends from that part of VA for sure. Y'all applying pressure too and I do wish there were a few more collabs with the Tidewater & the DMV. And I actually forgot to post Black Cobain. But I kinda wanted to focus on some newer artists, though.

A lot of those DMV street songs I actually posted do incorporate some elements of Gogo like the repeated drum kicks and the bounce on the bass.

Here is a song though from a Northern VA artist that remixes a Gogo beat. Not the best but it's a start though:

Cincinnati's hip hop scene kinda got a shot in the arm over the past two weeks as a number of "city" rappers made their own version of Omeretta the Great's "Sorry Not Sorry" (aka "Not Atlanta") and titled it "Not Cincinnati".

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j6ff...l=Da_Kevinshow

The "suburb" rappers from the Uptown section of Hamilton County then got together and made a response.

Let me know who you all think won this "diss" battle.
