A great Boston area song from Cousin Stizz and Johan Lenox. Johan Lenox is a classical music maestro from a wealthy suburban ma enclave. Who only recently got into rap in the last 5 years. The Johan is for Johann Sebastian Bach.

He does amazing arrangements and remixes for several hip-hop artists. he adds a bunch of quality to songs. The lyrics on this one and the content are superb. Listen to the dichotomy of someone from an upper middle-class background (Winchester MA), versus someone from a lower middle-class background (Dorchester) talking about a particular stage inn life ~mid-20s.

Two more Long Beach music videos - both with common shooting locations on the Westside.

If you think LA style is undynamic, just wait another decade until the Chicago drill stuff wears all the way out lol.

All of this is the same song with the same energy as far as im concerned. The variety and dynamism is sorely lacking man...

like i said earlier..

loc'd out braids, gang signs, graphic tees, and videos near the grape street (or some street like it), tat sleeves etc etc its all common from 03 Greedo on out. Ik LA makes a variety of stuff but it has this strong like minimalist, loc/gang music that I find to be un-dynamic and kind of dry.

The diversity of Sounds in Boston feels wider than in Los Angeles. And that is more of a knock on LA than a prop for Boston.

Los Angeles has had a formula that's worked for so many for so long everyone tries to get in that fold. Not literally everyone- but tis dominate.

Boston folks are just trying to express themselves because there's not much of a real chance to blow p anyway. And if they are trying to make noise they realize they gotta try whatever turns a head.

I think that's just because LA is just that unique. LA was that second major place to create it's own sound and genre after NYC. The problem with NY is that they soon lost their identity in terms of hip hop while LA has always remained LA.
I'm just saying, that if you make alot of music that is 'that' dynamic, you're really not that original per se.
If Boston is able to pull off more of this dynamic music, it's because they don't have their own style and basically copy what they think they like (as is New York).

The issue is the vast majority of Boston music sounds nothing like "New York". See the links above.

I know the New York thing would make it make more sense and fit more neatly into our psyche but Boston will take elements of whoever and put our own spin on it. Or someone can make our own sound entirely. We are definitely not wed to anyone sound.

LA is unique but I want the city to give us something new that we haven't been hearing for the last 30 years from them.

Some artists do, but it's a real minority. So if I'm putting together a playlist of LA artists, for me it becomes repetitive too quickly and discourages a deeper dive. Maybe that encourages more competition and creates more cream to rise to the top in the form of Kendrick, D. Smoke, Ab-Soul etc.

I think NYC has done a better job at recreating itself and its sound over the generations than LA has.

1982 NYC (Whodini) compared to
1992 NYC (PeteRock) compared to
2002 NYC (Dipset) compared to
2012 NYC (ASAP) compared to
2022 NYC (Ice Spice) all sound very noticeably different and keeps me tapping in every 5 years for new heat.

I can listen to a lot more of the Boston artists than LA artists in a row because it's gonna keep me interested. But again LA has exceptions like Dom Kennedy is one of my very favorite artist- have many of his albums.

NYC has many distinct sounds idk why people are still going with the NYC lost their sound when boom bap hasn't been popular for about 25 years now and NY has been making new types of music ever since.

I do think LA has diverse artists but there's a clear LA/California sound that its popular and as long as that remains popular, people will keep making that music.
