Black Boston kind of reminds me of a Black Toronto/London with the diversity.
Is this Boston Fusion music popular?
It's similar but the Fusion music isn't as popular as it should be because of the presence of Black Americans and that background influence that is lacking entirely in Toronto or London. That's why a guy like 8 zipp is as popular as he is- because the makes American-sounding music. Short story: 2 weeks ago I was playing his music while giving an uber ride and i guess the rider happened to be on the phone with her cousin in Boston and the cousin on the phone was like 'whose playing in the background?; The rider asked me And I told her '8 zipp'. Her cousin ws on the phone like "say on dawgs?" I said "on dead dawgs". He recognized an 8 zipp track playing in the background on the phone..
But yea you can find it and hear it. It's very popular in certain nightlife venues like Icon, Savvor, Yas, Unity Cultural Club. Probably peaked in 2016/17 in terms of those style of mixes in the club.
A lot of the Black American community in Boston is aware of, and connected to this gang music which really has no commercial purpose or viability and really isn't all that good. Former gang people control what gets played on B87 during a large part of the day. It repels the vast majority of the Boston MSA youth population.
Some artists making that style are better and more popular (Wave Capone, TwoGzlikeGucci, 8 zipp, SideStreet Capo, Trottie Y Gizzle) though....I gotta admit this might be my favorite 'hard' rap track ever in terms of the nihilism and iciness. But idk Vengeance was another good one thats way up there.
New Boston Fusion Music, youll hear French, Spanish, and English in this Afrobeats song. Artist is Cape-Verdean/Senegalese and DJs/producers are Nigerian. Has a feature form a Puerto Rican artist.
I will admit i'm a fan of drill music, mostly NY drill. Its interesting that besides its origin, Chicago, the areas in which its popular are all colder cities with large African and Caribbean populations. Drill has become quite popular in Africa and Continental Europe as well. Someone needs to do a study as why drill is so popular in these cities.
EDIT: just watched that video "Leave Me Alone", it looks like where i grew up in Suburban NJ lol. Is Mission Hill in Boston active like that? Or are those kids making that music because that's just the popular sound?
Bandmanrill is one of the more popular guys with this sound. He's from Newark. You'll notice its a mix of more mainstream hip hop, Jersey Club, and NY drill. It's popular with tiktok as well.

Yes its one of the most active areas for youth banging. Its not suburban at all really. Theres a 1% chance these kdis are just doing it for the look. Its just a torn down and remodeled housing project- used to be the bricks. but its probably the most acive youth gang area the last 3/4 years. Fun fact: Shabazz Napier is from Mission Main and i heard some stories about him too..
Bower street is similarly built but much less active. St Josephs Saint are adjacent to them and they control the area. H Block is north of them. St Josephs and Bower Street/Charlame Cour were both demolished in the 1960s and these urban townhomes were built in their place. Thats the case with many fomer Bostonbrick projects.
Before drill St. Josephs was making gangsta music. The dude in this video- i know him. He is a "red alert" if you see him just leave. He was caught on dashboard cam shooting people on Dale street broad day in 2016 an it was all over the news but somehow he was back on the streets. He's out now still releasing music but he peaked back in 2014. 60 cap was hard because its his home address. 60 crisupus atacks palce.

Yea Banmanrill sounds like most of the Boston artists. Many of these Boston artist, like Wave Capone and SAOBD Shizz and BoriRock are in Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Bronx every month- click these hyperlinks to see what im saying. Probably biting.
That Lil Uzi song i first heard just now onn 97.1 as I drove through new york last week. It played on the Boston radio a lot too. Haven't heard it in Bmore.
The Zumpy song would be better with less singing if they just let it rock as more of a club song.
But yes I've definitely heard many NY artists go with the drill-club fusion and the late 90s and early 2000s samples. I prefer that over the Brooklyn drill weve had the last few years.
