I feel VERY passionate about smoking, NOW I think it is silly to ban it, if you ban that you should start banning liquors (drunk driving kills more then cigarettes), prescription drugs ( which have more side effects the benefits), guns (HELLO) PERFUME ( talk about making someone cough and choke some smells are just awful) I truly could go on and on and get sillier, but I won't. I am sure a lot of you get my point which is there is a lot of causes of death and disease LIFE IS SHORT!
I work at a hotel, and some guy came in to check out early this morning and he had on so much cheap nasty cologne that the ENTIRE LOBBY stunk. For two hours. And this was during breakfast. I had so many people complain to me but what can I do about it?
I agree.
But to me that shows that it is not as addictive as some make out.
We carry on smoking because we don't want to stop.
Remember-once a smoker, always a smoker
Research shows smoking cigarettes is MORE addictive than heroin. I quit after 48 years and haven't touch a cigarette or desire to smoke. Quitting was EXTREMELY difficult and after many tries resorted to prescription medication.
I don't believe it should be outlawed. It is a personal choice, as is alcohol.
I don't know it for a fact, so it's just my opinion about what i have noticed... but workers that do take breaks... let's say about 10 minutes per hour, seem to be much more productive for the other 50 minutes per hour they work.
AND those workers aren't sitting in their office wasting time talking to people who stop by. I agree with your opinion.
Clayton has banned smoking in public places and that is bad enough given that most "public places" are privately owned and citizens have the right to vote with their feet in terms of going or not going to most of these places. However, even Clayton did not outlaw the use of tobacco products. The premise of this thread was that tobacco products should be outlawed because of the adverse health effects. Well, that would be one more intrusion into our lives and one more freedom that the government takes away. I don't smoke. But I am totally against the government outlawing any of the current freedoms that we have. Period! I am afraid that we are quickly becoming a facist country and the pompous "do gooders" seem to be on a power trip to take away as many of our freeedoms as possible. One day its cigarettes, the next time its cheeseburgers, then alcohol, then larger SUVs and pickups, then who knows???? This is just crazy stuff. And where does it all end? The answer is that it doesn't unless we stop it. The Bill of Rights was enacrted for a reason: To protect citizens from a power-hungry government. Well, it is certainly power-hungry now and power-hungry people line up and use government as a sheild to try and chip away at our freedoms one by one.

I was responding to a post where an ex smoker said they just went cold turkey and didn't fall for all this powerless addiction stuff.
I agree that it is very addictive, but would dispute that it is more addictive than heroin -at least for me.
I wouldn't prostitute myself, steal or any other such thing for a pack of cigarettes, or smoke if it was illegal and led me to make irrational decisions or worse.

Unfortunately, you are powerless over your own addiction....
I do not have an addiction to any of those things. I like to drink, and I do drink heavily at times. I will admit that because I want to be honest. I still can go without drinking with no ill effects. I recently went 9 days without drinking any alcohol at all. The stupid smokers can not even go to work without smoking multiple times in the middle. Smokers have to smoke from the moment they wake up, to the moment they go to sleep. When I have to tell my boss at work that I need breaks so I can go drink a beer, I will admit I have an addiction.
Ban cigarettes? It will never happen. There is too much tax money involved. Florida just added an additional $1 per pack. They are expecting $1 Billion dollars per year from the tax. Cigarettes are a big revenue generator for all states, just like they have discovered that red light cameras bring in big bucks.
We can all name things people have suffered/gone through due to Smoking & Dranking, but can we really name anything people have "positively" experienced with the habit?

Yeah, they look gross, but they are not hurting anyone but themselves. If someone wants to eat junk food all day and get obese, that is their business, not mine. I do not mind obese people, and/or chewers around me at all. To equivelate them to a smoker would be an obese person physically forcing hot dogs down your throat, or a chewer holding you down forcing you to do it with him. In other words, there is absolutely no comparison.
I agree...
